fortune favored the bold

It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.
-John Adams, letter to Abigail Adams, July 3, 1776

Yes it does, and just like then "the bold" are considered seditious extremists....

What makes what the founders did even more amazing is what they had to lose.

They lived comfortable, affluent lives, yet they stood on principle to fight for freedom and many paid the ultimate price. We could learn a lot from their convictions and devotion to liberty.

And may we do so for centuries to come.

And so we continue to fight for what is right and what is Constitutional in this country. . . too bad those in charge have forgotten. . . time to remind them in Nov!

I thought of that quote as I watches the (impressive) local fireworks show, and listened to a group of young girls sitting behind us sing along with 'The Star-Spangled Banner','America the Beautiful', and 'God Bless America'.
I think the founders would have had a lot to be proud of, had they seen and heard it. I know it made me see the display in a different light.
And yes, I celebrated with guns :-D
