What bothers me are articles like this one from Yahoo news, titled Kennedy death puts family dynasty in doubt which contain paragraphs such as this:

The bloodletting that occurs after one of these old bulls succumbs is often vicious. Quite right that their is no heir but the real issue is the power of the family is in decline so the heir would be weak in any case. There are decades of old grudges that will now be released within the MA Dem establishment. The only way to ensure an heir is to step aside and protect them from the machine by remaining in the seat until his death, Kennedy ensured the outcome was uncertain.
ReplyDeleteThe first sign of the battle was the ignoring of Kennedy's plea to return the succession back to the governor's pleasure. Obviously, the powers that be did not want Kennedy's chosen to be appointed when they can fight it out in a special election.

I vaguely remembered this from several years ago, and looked for what I could find. I know you are a librarian, and can quickly verify if this is a valid story.
