Don't vote for me.

I spent my school years with my nose frequently buried in a book and as a result wore glasses early (& contact lenses too late). I was in honors classes, AP classes, had football players threatening me for my editorials in the school newspaper, never got invited to those "my parents are out of town for the weekend" parties, took my gay friend to the homecoming dance (both years), ate a brown bag lunch almost every single day and even rode the school bus home the last day of senior year. My entire life I've been a dork.

So I suppose I should be thrilled to be considered cool enough to be part of the blogger in-crowd and be lobbying for your vote.

But I'm not and I won't. I realize this is probably intended to be fun, and perhaps I'm being ornery, but I don't like it. I've always believed that one of the most amazing things about the gunblog community is the lack of elitism and the "more pro-2A voices, the better" mentality. Popularity contests can defeat that purpose, especially when even the least well-known blogger can have an impact in the fight for our Second Amendment Rights. And, to be honest, even though I can throw together a seriously enjoyable Gunnie Prom, it doesn't mean I should be crowned queen of anything - I've gained blog fame mostly in spite of myself. If anything I should probably be voted "Most Likely to Blog Exclusively About Nail Polish and Cats, with a Gun Sitting on the Desk Next to Her Laptop."

I suppose I should also say that it's an honor to have been nominated to be one of the bloggers asked to give a company (albeit a very reputable company with an exceedingly clever marketing department and excellent prices on ammo) free advertising.

But, umm...no. Nice try, though.

  1. Schemes to extract value from gun bloggers seems to be growth industry right now.

  2. Popularity contests are stupid, especially on the internet.

I won't vote for you, and I won't ask anyone to vote for me. why? because I don't care.

That said, you could win if you wanted to.

  3. Alan - Yeah, well. I wish them luck but I won't be playing their reindeer games.

    MikeW- I better not, sheesh

  5. High school feetball players threatened you? Short little modular feminine you?

    What a world.

  6. Hey, Blogger has you back up! Yeah! It was probably crashed by some Anti-Gunners, I betcha!

Actually, as I posted at Unc's, I know too many of you to play favorites, and some of you know where I live!

  7. You've already won, my award, anyway.
And, I know I'm one of many who feel the same.

  9. Wow. That's a really well reasoned, cogent position. Wish I'd read this before I voted. I guess we uninformed voters are just a menace.

  10. I would have had it up sooner if Blogger hadn't blurped today :)

  11. Well said, lass, but you know what? There’s a bunch of folk out here who think you speak for us, & while you may not think of yourself as a “rockstar blogger”, you remain a solid voice for everybody’s gun rights. You’re fun to read, & we like you.

    Is that so wrong?

  12. Nope, and I am absolutely humbled by it. So thank you so very, very much

  13. What you said. Only it was lacrosse for me, and the threats were fulfilled.

And regardless of however this little popularity contest ends, you were awesome yesterday, you are awesome today, and you will undoubtedly continue to be awesome tomorrow. Compared to that, a trophy ain't much.

  14. Well, I voted for you before this post went up. At least, in the category where you aren't against me (insert evil grin). I agree with you on all points. But I'm an attention junkie. I graduated high school with a 4 point. (I think that is the first time I've admitted that on the internet. Meh, may as well go on out with the confession then.) I had a full tuition and fee waiver that I squandered in college. I did lose my National Honor Society collar thingie the last semester of my senior year. (You can ask me privately.) I was in the gifted and talented program since 2nd grade. And I'm old enough that it meant you actually had to score something meaningful on an IQ test rather than just have whiny parents.
So, I've got my own dork credentials. I'm also a first soprano. There's a vocalist joke. How many sopranos does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Just one. She holds it and the whole world revolves around her. I've spent A LOT of time on stage. And I'm shameless in my attention wanting ways.
I'm actually beside myself honored to be in the same category as you, Tam, Roberta, etc. I consider myself pretty small time there, really. I can freely campaign for votes because I'm honestly out of my league.
And I think I had a point when I started this comment... More whiskey! That must've been it.

  15. I will not vote for you.

Does this mean we have to stop stalking you too?

  16. Meh- currently sitting on an Air Farce base, so I can't even look at the thing since it's about "weapons"... sigh...

  17. Jennifer - not enough whiskey, apparently.

McThag - as long as you do it quietly.

NFO - that just cracks me up.

  18. Oh, and Linoge? You kick ass in all sorts of ways. So thanks.

  19. So, it seems wisdom and a true perspective of self still runs strong in you rather than a need for insubstantial fame and glory.

What a boring person you must be. Good Work.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Solus - if that's boring then I'm perfectly okay with it. :)

  21. OLD NFO, you wouldn't expect anyone in the Air Force to be interested in weapons, would you?

A Marine Corps base, that would be a different matter ...

    ;-)

  22. Too late, I voted before I read your blog. Sorry!

  23. Having used the popularity-contest route to get a free trip to Blackwater to shoot someone else's ammo through yet another someone else's gun, I am not above whoring myself out for an exceedingly clever ammo vendor.

That being said, I'm already getting to go shoot someone else's ammo through my own guns, and this is just . . . well, marketing.

"It's an honor just to be nominated," and I'll leave it at that.

  24. I was thinking about Blackwater too Kevin.

I went back and dug up Tam's "don't vote for me" post.

You know how that turned out.

  25. Sorry, but I can't take my vote back.

  26. It's a farce. How do I know? I wasn't nominated. ME! Heck, I'm read by dozens daily. I'm sure my loyal followers are up in arm in righteous indignation.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sorry, Breda, I already had cast my ballot before this was posted.

In any event, while I was also an unpopular, brown-bag nerd in high school I consider this more about recognizing you for the quality of your work rather than a popularity contest.

  28. Congrats, you didn't win. You came 2nd to Tam.
