place your bets

My mother works with a woman who is a member of the NRA but "absolutely hates guns."

How long do you think it'll take me to get her to the range?

  1. The force is strong within you, young one. Guns are to hate what Oreos are to steak. Let it flow...

  2. Why's she an NRA member if she hates guns?

  3. She says she loves her liberty and doesn't want some bureaucrat telling her she can't have a gun if she wants one. Plus, she totally gets the fact that if you criminalize guns, only the criminals will have guns.

  4. I wonder if its like Michael Moore. A family member gifted him a life membership when he was young.

Still I give Breda untill my carry permit arrives to have her on the firing line.

Should be more than enugh time!

  5. Ah, so she's politically pro-gun but personally afraid of them. Unusual, but understandable.

  6. That's where I started, Mike.

I was scared of the guns the media told me were scary and dangerous...but also the 2nd Amendment always made PERFECT sense to me. (Collective right? Bullshit! 2A is for killing the government just like we did to the Red Coats!)

  7. I was about to ask the obvious question, but saw you already answered it. The world needs more people like her - a fear of guns can be overcome (or not, if you so choose) but a respect for them -- much more difficult to gain.

  8. This one is a keeper, bring her along slowly and safely and she will shoot, and smile about it for a long long time.

  9. Within three weeks. That's if you're slow about it. If it doesn't happen within the month of August, I'll be amazed.

  10. Two weeks. If I'm wrong I'll buy the first round next time you and Mike are over here.

  11. I advise going carefully with her... if she has deep fears concerning guns they should be addressed obliquely. It might seem a fine idea to toss her an unloaded gun to demonstrate that it's only a tool, but if she's starting from an irrational place that would probably just drive her to a even more irrational one.

I'm sure you know all this anyway. But it's worth while approaching somebody like that indirectly, to confirm that first of all she's open to the possibility of learning to shoot. She might find the self discipline required appealing - I believe many anti gunners project their own insecurities onto gun owners. Many non- or anti gunners are surprised to discover that shooters can be reasonable, calm, intelligent, articulate, and responsible people.

Looks like a job for a librarian.

  12. Twenty-four hours.

Her story doesn't make sense. I bet she's manipulating you to get range time. She's probably in her basement machine shop right now, bending an AK receiver.

  13. By Friday, 15 August, 1930 hours, she'll be converted.

  14. Word verification to the contrary, my guess is Labor Day Weekend. Not too rushed.

  15. WHY is she a member of the NRA? Is she part of the anti-gun movement that's trying to infiltrate the NRA's ranks and affect change within the NRA in order to destroy it eventually?

  16. Duh, half the NRA mambers are actually gun control activists who spend their time there, hence the tiny membership numbers of the Brady campaign.

    Don't you know anything :p
