Tabhair 'om póg, is Éireannach mé

Saint Patrick's day has always been very traditional for my family. We get up early, go to Mass, and then downtown to the parade. In the evening we all gather at Mom's for corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and of course, Irish brown bread...

Made of white and wheat flours, some buttermilk, a little salt, soda and butter, this rustic bread is heartier than soda bread and so simple to make. And thanks to my Mom, the tradition has been passed on to me.

Part of the fun, of course, is getting your hands in the dough.

Have a lovely Saint Patrick's day, everyone!

  1. I wish I could cook simple stuff like that. But I am helpless in kitchen. Likely starve to death. You have a link to a recipe and assembly procedure?

And remember yer Irish. Whale Oil Beef Hooked.

  2. Unfortunately, I quit making corned beef and cabbage these days.

I was the only one eating it, and it's not worth the effort when half goes to waste.

Don't let it fool you, friends-- that's a half pint container of milk in front of the bowl!

  10. Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone!

Rustmeister - you could make corned beef hash for breakfast the next day with the leftover corned beef & cabbage.

I'm getting hungrier just thinking about corned beef & cabbage.

  13. My wife has some corned-beef cookin' away in our crockpot. She'll add some potatoes and stuff later for the feast.

She always stocks up on corned beef this time of year and set it back for later in the year when the prices are higher and availability is low or absent.

    Yum!

  16. Good shooting Mom.

I took three colleges shooting, one was a new shooter, and she kept her nicely drilled target on the back of her office door after.

    Good propaganda!

    It totally startled many co-workers.
