range report

Oh, I know what you're thinking. You're scrolling through my previous posts thinking, "Yeah, yeah...okay, Breda, you're very funny. Beef jerky underpants and sword-wielding librarians. Great, hilarious. But get back to the guns!"

So, fine. Here. Gun stuff...just for you.

I went to the range today solely to shoot the S&W .38 snubby. I had my epiphany. An angel (no, not really. It was Leah, the chick on staff at the range) told me that keeping your thumb tight up against the frame makes a world of difference. Hallelujah, and it was so. I still need lots of practice, but at least now I'm actually hitting the target, near-ish to the center:

(click, embiggen. you know the drill)

I also need to make a confession.

I tasted the Glock Kool-aid today.

And, God help me, I loved it.

I had that koolaid moment too when I broke a few revolvers...

I decided to get a "reliable" gun that I could fix if it ever got broke. Why'd I choose Glock? Mainly because of Kit's (kiloindiatango blog) experiences with 'em...

Cheers! Nice target!

Yes, damnit, yes, yes!

Screw around with esoteric toy guns all you want after you buy a G19.

I could have saved myself a LOT of annoyance and dollars if I had just bought a Glock instead of all those oddball guns I wasted time tinkering with.

"Get yerself a Glock and lose that nickel-plated sissy-pistol."

Actually I happen to LIKE nickel-plated sissy-pistols but I have a G17 in my holster right now.

I swore I'd never buy a Glock. Anything but a Glock. That is, until I had the chance to buy a G19 for a song from a buddy of mine. Now I carry the darn thing more than my USP Compact. Love that ugly ass little gun.

H'mm. A couple of years back, the local gunshoprangeownerdeputyguy, knowing my huge fondness (ahem) for plastic sidearms and the shorty .40, handed me his new Glockette in said caliber, a couple hundred rounds, and asked me to "go break it in." Shot fine, one misfeed early on, and I still don't like 'em.

...Dependable as can be, though. I'm pretty sure the misfeed was my fault. But they are pure-dee ugly. IMHO, life's too short to carry an ugly sidearm. ;)

YMMV.

I'm not a Kool-Aid drinker, but I do love my Glock 29. 10mm is a wonderful cartridge and coming out a 2.something inch barrel is just sweet.

That being said, I'd buy anything. My next pistol won't be a Glock, not because I don't like them, but because I like variety.

Yes, Glocks are ugly as sin, but it's a tool and I doubt my need of it is ever going to be during a fashion show.

Of course, if I ever find a .357 Magnum in Semi-Auto that's not a Desert Eagle, I'm selling 'em all for that.

Can't get myself to buy a glock, I have shot many of them, over the past 3 years, everything from the compacts to fullsize, 9mm 40, 45, 357 sig, They are reliable.
But I don't like them.
The Springfield XD is decent, & points the same way my HP, or 1911 does.
Recently fired several different S&W MP's, now they did get my interest up, & nearly bought one, but still holding out.

I admit it, I'm a Glock fanboy. My Glock 23 was the first handgun I bought, and ten years on, its still the fist I'd grag if TSHTF, and the last I'd sell if I had to part with my collection.

I'd be happy to try a Glock, if they'd just put a trigger on one. Plastic frames are fine; Lego pieces wired to a mercury-switch, not on my delicate finger-pad.

You guys are all missing the point of the post: Breda figgered out how to hold a pistol! Fully half (half the full?) of the big tough old pistoleros I've ever watched spray the wall at 50' had a death grip on the end of the butt, with their thumb tucked in and their hand all balled up like they were fixing to pistol-whip--just like in the movies. Way to take coaching, Breda. Who is that instructor, anyway?

No offense, but I hate Glocks.

This is why:

earth-bound - it scares me too. I don't know if I'd be able to carry one, for the exact reason you specify.

Breda,

By the way, do you go shooting at the range in Eastlake?

EB - yep!

Breda,

Do they still have Ladies' Night on Fridays?

Ultimately, the most important factor for choosing a gun is YOU. It’s your money, spend it on whatever fits your needs best. Don’t fret over what the cool-aid drinkers think because it works for them.

Having said that….. my Glock 19 is the only handgun I will ever need. Other handguns would just make a dent in my ammo budget….ammo that I could have used to become a better shooter. To me, the G19 feels like a natural extension of my arm. Like Gaston Glock designed it so the grip angle would be perfect for me, but this may not be the case for you. Add two magazines and a mag carrier, and I have all the equipment I need to be competitive in IDPA, but you may not be interested in IDPA. Clip a light to the rail, and it’s all I need in a bedside gun, but you may already have a shotgun instead.

I feel comfortable carrying my Glock in a holster with a round in the chamber despite the lack of manual safeties, because (1) I know it won’t go off until I press the trigger, no matter what happens to the gun, (2) I cannot fail to disengage the manual safety at an inopportune moment, (3) I won’t be lulled into a false sense of security by relying on a manual safety that can slip off or that I can forget to engage.

Ymmv,

Would you carry a Colt Peacemaker in your holster with the hammer back?

Good for you! I love Glocks, but realize they're not for everybody. I prefer to carry one (CCW) and compete with them most of the time, but I also give props and almost equal time to St. John Moses Browning (PBUH) for the excellent 1911 .45 ACP. None of these might be right for you, so try something different whenever you get the chance. Even if you don't like it at first, learn from it... you never know when you might have to pick one up from some unfortunate soul's wounded body and defend yourself with it.
