I shot a Heckler&Koch today. Meh.

One of my former chicks with guns loaned me the H&K P2000 that her father gave her. From what I've heard her father has quite a collection of firearms and was excited that perhaps one of his daughters might someday share his passion. So he gave her the gun hoping that she'd get into shooting after the one time I took her to the range.

But until today, until I took it to the range, the gun remained pure and pristine - fresh from the factory.

It was really fun to shoot (I love 9mm) and I had the satisfaction of making a big fat hole in the target, but I just don't get the H&K hype, or the price that goes along with it. I'm thinking it's the firearms equivalent of buying a Prada handbag. I'm just not impressed by name brands.

That's okay - H&K doesn't really care about you, the civilian firearms owner. To paraphrase Mr. Correia, they're H&K, and we all suck.

Actually, they are wonderful weapons - like the Leopard II, a bit over engineered, but deadly and demanding attention to maitenance, training, practice and the crew's love. Remember that Germany had the very best tanks in World War II, but American Sheridans and Russian T-34s out numbered them and kept on coming.

Breda, I own an H&K USP Compact .40 and wouldn't trade it for the world. Sure I paid a little more, but the reliability, simplicity (broken down is 5 parts, am I forgetting something?), and engineering are truly top grade.

On the other hand, I also carry an old S&W .357 revolver and wouldn't trade it for the world either.

And then there is an even older Cheyenne Arms .25 semi that is a whole 'nother story, a piece of crap, but I love it. . .

I could go on and on.

Shoot what you love and love what you shoot, that's what I always say.

My carry gun is an H&K P2000SK (.40 S&W), and I also have a USP Tactical. What I like about both guns is that the more I shoot them, the more they reward me with tight groups, consistent handling, very direct and positive controls (no "mush" to it at all), and incredible reliability.

I began my relationship with both by thinking, "What's all the fuss? They're fine, but not the end-all be-all." But now I'm a total convert (probably an H&K fanboy!), as they've been great firearms all around. Neither has had a misfeed or jam through thousands of rounds of everything from junk ammo like Wolf or Monarch to match-quality ammo, and they take far less time to clean than any other gun I have--it seems like a few swipes and the polygon barrel is completely clean.

Of course, I could just be partial to German engineering, as my other "hot & heavy firearm romance" now is a Sig P226 Elite, and my first handgun was a Sig P220... but the more you shoot an H&K the more you like it.

Breda, just in case you missed it.

Apologies to all H&K fanboys.

You knew this was coming...

Do I dare ask if you've tried a Gl**k yet? If not, you probably should. You will either love it, or it will be another "Meh". I'm not a Glock fanboy even though I have a couple, I prefer 1911's myself. A lot of people just love Glocks and it is hard to argue with success.

You might see if you can borrow or rent one someplace......

I share your sentiments Breda, although I own two USPs. I consider them to be very reliable handguns that are durable, with suck wad triggers. I don't worship them the way some people do.

I heard that German tanks kept breaking down due to their complexity.

A few of my friend's have USP compacts as their primary carry guns, and they seem to love them to death, and I have a few friends that are partial to colleccting H&Ks (I really need to try a P7 out, they look neat) But none of them reach the fanboy status.

Definetly H&K monopolizes the video game and movie scene, so lots of people who've never handled a gun seem to really like H&Ks (And Desert Eagles for the exact same reason)

But overall I think they fit in that magical realm of handguns where the feel and ergonomics of each peice is insanely subjective.

I've never disliked shooting any of the H&Ks I've shot (unlike Glocks, which for those entirly subjective reasons I don't care for) but I could never justify dumping that kind of scratch on one...espeshally since no H&Ks are on our "Approved hangun roster" so even a beat up peice often commands the same price of a new one across the boarder in New Hampshire...

I'm not sold on them either. Fine guns to be sure- but out of my price range for what you get out of them.

I was a bit disappointed with sigs- but thats not set in stone as I've only handled a couple.

I thought the ergonomics on the Beretta vertec in 9mm were very comfortable. that might be worth a peak the next time you swing by a gun shop.

I actually like the grips on the older smith & wesson autos though- so I'm kinda weird.

Someone more clever than me came up with this statement, but I'll repeat it here:

"H&K makes the best $600 gun that $900 will buy."

HK: Because you suck, and we hate you.

Tamara and Larry are both fun to listen to or read on this subject. Tamara tends to get all fired up. :-)
