crashed.

That adrenaline stuff is amazing...

...until your body stops pumping it into every fiber of your being.

Two days after a man who wasn't allowed to be driving somehow managed to plow a van (twice!) into the trunk of my Honda anyway*, my muscles have mostly stopped twitching, my joints have quieted down, and I am oh, so very tired. I fantasize about big bathtubs full of hot water and Epsom salts and my own personal massage therapist. I'm ashamed to admit Mike had to drive me to work last night because I was too skittish to do it myself. I might call a chiropractor after I talk to the insurance. My car is a mess and I smell like Absorbine Jr.

And, sure - I've definitely felt worse in my life but I'm pissed off that I have to feel this way at all.

So I'm spending the day in bed, feeling tender, sore and blue, and taking comfort in my cats, a bottle of Advil, and Netflix on my EeePC.

*He was arrested for driving with a suspended license, among other things. I'm sure the judge will make it even more illegal-er for him to get behind the wheel this time. That should work.

When I read your account of the accident, I was reminded ofthe guy who tried to rob an ATM by chaining it to the rear bumper of his truck, and attempting to rip it off the foundation (there'd be NOTHING suspicious about a truck dragging an ATM down the road at night in a shower of sparks, right?)
Anyway, he managed to rip the bumper of his truck off, and fled in panic, leaving his bumper with- you guessed it- his license plate.
If we must have criminals, at least let us have stupid ones.
Hope you feel better right soon.

He could've been a carjacker. That's one reason I have a .357mag in my car. The NRA has a nifty holster made especially for autos.

There used to be a lot of "bump 'n rob" in KC a few years ago. That is until someone realized that guns can shoot through car does---inside to out. That discouraged the carjackers.

I'm so sorry, Breda. I hope you feel better soon. I'd gladly be your personal massage therapist, if only we lived closer together!

I hope the insurance company (most likely yours) won't total out your car, because it doesn't look like the rear quarter panels were damaged; looks mostly like the trunk lid, bumper cover and trunk lip needs to be replaced. I'm estimating $4,000 worth of damage. Hmm...the car's only worth $2000 (to the insurance company, anyway), so they might just total it out. Sucks, because now you'll have to buy a new car and be saddled with car payments again.

Yeah, they'll make it even illegaler for the twit to drive, but that's not going to stop him. And most likely the twit didn't have insurance so you'll probably have to sue his estate. It's going to be several years of stress and bureaucratic bullshit.

Wai - I would not be surprised if they total it. It doesn't take much damage to total a Honda Civic.

Breda,

Replacement UMPC stickers are in the mail.

I'd rather they total it. You get full replacement value then. If they repair it, then you try to trade it in later, just to find the repair listed on carfax and they won't give you even blue book value for the trade.

If the insurance wants to repair it, make sure you are compensated for the lost value of a carfax listed prior wrecked vehicle.

Aw, Breda, that's all no fun at all! I lost two cars in three months and had a panic attack two days after the second wreck. Scary! Take care of yourself and rest up.

Breda,

I've found that a prophylactic short run of muscle relaxants and OTC Advil do wonders at avoiding hurting too badly a couple of days later.

I'm convinced that a lot of the muscle damage comes becuase those suckers lock up tight, especially while you sleep.

Please heed the advice to see a doctor. I seperated my shoulder in a bike racing crash and took a week to decide I was in enough pain that I needed to see the doctor. Don't try to be tough it isn't worth the pain.

Crucis,

The car holster is Illegal for use in Ohio. You can have a loaded firearm on your person in a holster, in the glove compartment or console, in a box, bag, purse or container with a closing mechanism on it in plain sight or in a locked box.

Those are the ONLY 4 legal carry methods in Ohio for a CCW holder in an automobile.

Can't clip the holster to the seatbelt, can't holster in a holster fastened the the steering column or dash, can't throw it on the seat, dashboard or floor either.

Don't expect too much from the judge, there was just last week a man arrested in Ohio City for his 16th DUI. On a tractor, as he is banned from an automobile or truck. Not illegal to drive a tractor with no license, but illegal to drive one intoxicated. For the 16th offence he can only get something like 6 months in jail.

Adrenaline is wonderful stuff, but the aftereffects do make Pournelle's Grendel somewhat unlikely.

Beware the insurance company, even yours -- they are not your friend. The insurance company's goal is to take your money, not pay it out.

If you want an advocate -- someone to watch out for your interests and well-being -- get an attorney and then ask them what and how to do things.

Speaking of more illegal-er...

When my car was hit by an un-licensed, un-insured driver, that driver DROVE to the court date for her driving-without-a-license ticket and then DROVE HOME after receiving her sentence.

Thats suxors.

Get well.

I got smoked by an inattentive driver last spring and saw it coming so I "tensed" up and paid the price in soreness. But at least I only got hit once! Not twice!! Being a paramedic I felt I could "assess" myself(some medical people are like that!) that worked well..not!!

I was accident recently myself...and I still feel a bit jittery behind the wheel.

Hot baths cure everything. =)

Hope your situation gets better soon.

You should use this as an excuse for a hot tub!

Full sized pickup trucks are rather cheap right now.

The next time Mr. No License hits you, put the truck in reverse and crush him.

Clean what's left of him off your bumper with a rag.

I was headed out the door. Girlfriend asked where.
I said "Someone rear-ended Breda's car. I'm going to put him in the ground."

Fortunately girlfriend KNOWS Breda lives in Ohio.

Nobody runs into our adopted baby sister -twice- and lives.

Holly Pervocracy or Gay Cynic...
Can you furnish me an alibi...
Brigid... You didn't read this!

Now if that putz drops dead, I'll be soooo embarrased...

My adversary was found in a bar, so they didn't charge him with DUI. But, no insurance, license, or registration, plus out of state. After he got out of lock-up, he stole the car out of the impound yard and was stopped 50 miles up the road, drunk. My slight bit of satisfaction was I broke the arm of one of his passengers, and totaled the car due to the extensive damage my bike and my body did to it. That was what caused the second stop, fender and door shredded, and hood, roof, and windshield damage. (10 year old Impala)
To cap it off, the next day it hit the news that my insurance company had gone down the tubes. 3 years to collect the minimum coverage I had through the state fund for that sort of failure. I NEVER carry low amounts since then.

Breda, hope you feel better soon.

The license plate issue reminded me of an accident I had back in the 70's while stationed in Korea. A little 3-wheeled pickup came out of a side road right in front of me and I clipped the back of the guy's truck, knocking the whole bed of the pickup off - license plate and all. The guy never even slowed down. After waiting 3 hours for the MP's, we loaded the pickup bed in the back of my truck and we drove to the MP station to report the accident. Every MP at the station came out to see the "license plate" with truck bed attached. They unloaded the truck bed and sent me on my way. I never heard another word about it after that.

Be sure to contact your DA's office, talk to the DA handling your case, and explain that you want the judgement to include restitution to the victim (YOU.). They can and do do that, but sometimes they forget.
