In a perfect world...
Every time teenage girls (and their mothers. Ugh.) came to my desk and asked for Twilight, it pained me. Sure, I was happy that people were reading again and coming to the library but I wanted to grab them by the shoulders and ask, "Have you ever seen Buffy? Don't you want to be made of kickassery and win instead of mooning over some emo twink with too much eyeliner? And Willow, zOMG! She's this supergenius nerdy chick who helps to save the world and it's really cool! The show is all about being smart and strong!"
I'm sure they'd just blink at me, mouths agape, and say, "But Edward is so sparkly."

Ha! I love it! Am a Buffy fan and have also read all the Twilights. I agree that Buffy's The Best! (I liked Jake better than sparkly Edward).
Well, he is sparkly.
I am SO sending this to the wife. It's worth a night on the couch.
What really threw me was when I bought the book and the saleswoman said "Oh, I hope you like it! We need more men like Edward!"
I wanted to say "Men like Edward are in prison," but somehow restrained myself.
Yup.
Figgered that Edward would last exactly one episode with Buffy.
Hehehe, I saw this a while back, glad that you found it.
I can't stand the Twilight series, either, in part because of the weaksauce protagonist who can't do anything on her own with her maaaaan, literally. Like, when he leaves, she just sits around, catatonic, for months. Puh. Theh. Tic.
Curses, this is what happens when I get my code languages mixed up. *facepalm*
Haven't seen the movie or read the books.
From what I've heard, it looks like I'm not missing much.
My 14-year-old daughter has a t-shirt reading, "And then Buffy staked Edward. The End."
Nailed it, she did.
LOL.
I would have rather seen him meet Blade; it would have been a lot shorter clip...
That would have been a *MILLION* times better a movie. Easily. Did need more Willow, though. :-)
I once saw a pic from Twilight with the caption "The movie would have been so much better if he had just eaten her."
I read the summaries on Wikipedia. They gave me the creeps.
Buffy rulez, Edward drools. And Charisma, well, she has Ca-Ris-Ma! (s)
Buffy. Xena. Willow should have had her own show. Strong role models.
Then there were all the strong women on the 90s Star Treks:
B'Elanna Torres from Voyager. (even if she had to be half Klingon to kick butt)
Major Kira on DS9.
Tasha Yar on TNG
etc.
Not great shows, but strong characters, and the doctors, scientists etc who showed up all over the place.
I wish I could un-see that. Sparkly poofter in a tree, indeed.
Jim
Even Lestat was more manly than Edward, for crissake...
Incidentially, there's an image floating around of another famous vampire type punching Edward in the face. The Count from Sesame Street, to be precise.
"One punch, ah ah ah!"
Andrew C: I would not have been able to restrain myself. Did that sales girl perhaps sleep with a doll of Chucky, or perhaps Freddy Kruger?
Kristopher: That poofie wank wouldn't be a five minute minion. Buffy would zero him so fast, his fans would turn to dust.
we hope!
Whats TV?
Okay that was awesome! I've never seen or read any of the Twilight books and still think that Buffy's kickassery rules. When it comes down to metrosexual sparkles against a good woman with a stake, the stake wins.
Daughter read the book just to see exactly what the movie came from. Short version from her was "Edward is an abuser and dirtbag and the girl is a doormat."
MUCH glad she liked Buffy & Willow. And Firefly.
What can you expect with our culture of tolerant wanna-bes and the pussification of the western male that has sapped our strenght as a nation -see the article by Kim du Toit at:
http://www.theothersideofkim.com/index.php/essays/41/
We don't need more men like Edward (metrosexualish failure at being a real man or even human), nor more women like Buffy (liberal twizzle headed fantasy world bimbos). We need more men like Dr. Van Helsing, Dracula's main protagonist, (a real life example: the Ronald Reagan man’s man type who wisely and loyally stick to their moral principles and fight for them and uphold family values at the same time while not demeaning woman but who depend on their strengths). we also need more women like Rose Sayer, Catherine Hepburn's character in The African Queen - 1951 (a real life example: well, the owner of this blog, Breda, who seems quite ready, willing and able to stand up and defend her moral principles yet does not blur the distinction between a man and a woman in doing so). Note that in each instance those moral principles for which each person I mentioned stands are those of freedom, individuality, teamwork by individuals for the common good, a bedrock of decency, defeating a common enemy such as tyranny and evil, the willingness to take up arms to do so and the willingness to die trying - in essence good conservative moral values at play. These are the kind of people that we truly need today, and we need plenty more of them than what we now have at hand.
All the best,
Glenn B
I've never watched an episode of Buffy. I've only seen what little Buffy or Twilight I've been exposed to in passing on the Internet.
That said, she SO kicked his sparkly ass-ets.

What sparkly Ed no longer does
PPPP:
Start watching. Classic Whedon series.

Plus Buffy & Willow were hot, the twilight chick, not so much.
I only wish they could have found a way to put Jennifer Love Hewitt on the show.
Buffy is a morality play wrapped in a scifi/horror show wrapped in a teen movie.
Twilight's just a teen movie.
Not that there's anything wrong with either one, but I'd rather my spawn if I had them be more like Buffy.
I sent this blog post to my girlfriend and she loved it. I should probably propose.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
My sister got me a "Buffy slayed Edward" mug for XMas.
If only....
OK, older post, but I haven't hit my RSS feeds lately. Just thought I'd mention that while I haven't (and refuse to) read any of the Twilight books, Buffy was fantastic. Unfortunately, I didn't watch Buffy until a few years after it was cancelled (after seeing Firefly, which I also didn't see until after cancellation).
The creepy thing about Buffy (or maybe just Buffy fans) to me is how many women seem to think that Spike is the ideal man. He needed a good staking, methinks.
Here's one you may like, Breda...

Modern Warfare 2 meets Twilight.
So awesome.
