first kill

Take a look at my brave cat, defender of hearth and home...

(he was purring when this photo was taken)
Desmond got his first mouse last night. Momma's big sweetie boy is now a mighty hunter - I'm so proud.

( I raised him & his sisters from when they were itty bitty squeaking handfuls, bottle-fed them for six weeks, and debated with Mike on whether we should get them a mouse from the pet store to teach them to hunt. I needn't have worried - they've grown up to be gorgeous, perfectly designed little mouseslayers without any help from yours truly. )

When I rescued Charlie, at 6 weeks old, 3 1/2 years ago, and took him to the Vet. She told me he was 1 to 2 days away from dying. He was so weak, he couldn't stand. To date he has caught 17 mice. More than a good pay-back I'd say. Cudos to you, Desmond.

I don't know what mine would do with a mouse, but I do know they wouldn't be held back by dull claws!

Well, did he get a treat? :-)

@NFO
Yeah, the mouse.

I've read that cats need to be taught to kill. How did that part work out for him, given that you bottle-fed him.

Awe, he doesn't look at all like a killer in the photo.

Weer'd Beard: I've also been told that, however my cat was six-ish weeks old when we adopted her, and never learned to hunt/kill (except crickets, which I think she considers a delicacy). She's 10 years old now, and last fall she woke me up at 2 am with a dead mouse. I was *very* proud!

I'm still betting Desmond double-tapped Mickey with a Bersa, because "That's how Mom does it!"

My cat caught mice all the time, but when she caught her first squirrel, boy was she proud. She had it laid out on the front porch when I drove up from work, and was standing beside it with her chest puffed out and what I swear was the most shit-eatin grin a cat could have.

WV: Flecis. What my cattis don't havis.

I've thought of buying hamsters or gerbils and staging little kitty death-matches in the basement. But only THOUGHT of it.

*grin* My dogs have occasionally taken vermin -- my youngest (a lab/basset mix) has mauled two shrews and a mouse.

My oldest, on the other hand (pure basset) once cornered a rat. The rat took a swipe at him. Bad idea; my boy is seventy pounds of cranky. When we got to him he had the rat and was swinging his head back and forth in the classic neckbreaker, and you could just see the thought bubble over his head:

"TRY. THAT. ON. ME. WILL. YOU?!"

Gawd, I love my dawgs.
