Uh oh.

Remember our mystery plant? Well, I think we might be growing melons.

Luckily, you can get them to go vertical.

Yummy Melons.

Ummmm . . . you can tell that by the shape of the leaves? Or are there little melon-shaped polka dots that I don't see? I stared at the pic like I was looking for Waldo but I don't see any tiny melons peeking out!

Ah, yes. But what kind of melons, eh? Watermelons, muskmelons, cantaloupes, honeydews?

Lissa, I'm just guessing by the leaves so far. I'm hoping now that it's not anything crazy like a pumpkin.

Hey, I know how to find out what those plants are! You go to your local library and ask a reference librarian....

But pumpkin = pie!! It also equals Pumpkinshoot, which equals crazy pictures of Jay G. What's not to like?

We had a winter squash go icky on us this winter. I tossed it into the yard waste pit for the squirrels to eat. Appears one of the seeds got buried, and now looks about the same as yours.

I'm gonna see if I can get some veggies out of my yard waste pit!

We have a volunteer potato this year (must've missed one at harvest last year).

Or some kind of squash.

I wouldn't touch a straight line like that with a 10 foot pole.

It's definitely a cucurbit, but I'm not sure exactly what kind. Have you grown anything there in the past from that family that may have reseeded itself?

breda said...

BobG - I cleaned out a cucumber, put the goo in the compost and then the compost in the garden. Voila.

Cucumber is a cucurbit, so that may be what you have. If it has climbing tendrils, then the odds are high it is a cucumber.
I have tomatillos constantly reseeding in my garden. I always let a few fruits ripen and drop, then it is just a matter of thinning them when they come up. I have some of them blossoming already.

UM, looks like pumpkin to me. I got a bunch in my garden now. Could also be cucumber or watermelon, very similar leaves, but I'd say the odds are pumpkin.

Leave it grow and see. Nice little mystery.
