going dark

This afternoon, our family lost our hero...and though it happened the way these things usually do, I don't think any of us were really prepared for a world without him in it.

I'm going to need time and silence (and the Arizona desert) to say goodbye.

I won't say I'm sorry for your loss. I will say that I congratulate you on knowing and even being related to a man like that. There are only so many people in the world that can do the things he did without so much as an expectation of 'thank you'.

I think Patton said it best: "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." God speed, Wallace.

Breda -

None of us can truly share your loss. But please know that you and yours are in our thoughts and prayers, and take what solace you can from knowing that. He sounds like a man I am truly sorry I never knew.

For what it's worth, I think your family has other heroes. Anyone would be proud of a legacy such as he leaves behind.

I wish you a Christmas full of love, joy, and many, many stories of the amazing man he was.

Park along N. 8th Ave and hike in through the parking lot and across the basketball court, both of which are due north from 33°35'54.04"N, 112°4'59.46"W. It's an easy trail and there's a good rock for sitting at the above coordinates. Been there many times. It's quiet and you won't hear the city anymore. (Use good desert sense. There are snakes so don't be puttin' your hand where it shouldn't be.)
You have my sincere sympathy.

Breda,

It always hurts to loose one.

It seems to hurt just a little more during the holidays.

May he have been checked in with St. Peter a half an hour before the devil knew he passed!

It might be time to check the CMP North Store once in a while after they open in the new year and see if any of the Garands talk to you like an old friend.

BTW, do you know what that shoulder patch in the picture was?

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your Mom and your husband.
