the dignity they (didn't) deserve

Well, I guess Obama kicked off his 2012 campaign with that speech he gave last night. They even had tshirts made for the rally.

Oh, I mean memorial service.

Yes, the Obama administration felt it necessary to hand out souvenir t-shirts at a memorial for the victims of a mass murder.

Concession stands were also open during the cleverly branded "Together We Thrive: Tucson & America" event.

And the crowd went wild. No, really - they did.

Ah. The Wellstone pep rally, err, memorial service part two.

Yes, Together We Thrive. Unless you're one of the six dead people they're memorializing. Well, they're just SOL I guess.

Yeah, I thought that was supposed to be a memorial service or funeral or something like that.... I guess Obama didnt get the memo.

He was really grand standing last night, and really turned things into more of a pep rally.

He mentioned politics and big govt probably 9 to 1 over those poor people who died.

And the thing that really pissed me off was how he kept going on and on about the virtues of govt in times like these. Usually people talk about turning to faith and looking to guidance from God to help them get through these tough situations. Yep, that man is not a christian... His religion is government.

Need to make a bunch of shirts to hand out that say:

"My family member died at Tucson and all I got was this lousy t-shirt."

From what we're being told (in Tucson) is that the shirts were made and provided by the University, but regardless of where they came from they were inappropriate.

I am ashamed and appalled that so many in my community would cheer so freely at what should have been a somber event. There were a few times when cheers were appropriate, but no where near as much as what happened.

You could hear people booing Governor Brewer as she took the stage, and presumably the same people yelling "COME BACK" and "WE MISS YOU" when Nappy got on. This memorial was no place for that.

For the first half of his speech, I felt 0 was giving a decent speech, and then he turned it to political discourse and civility. He blew it right there. I though for an few minutes before that point I may have found a sliver of substance I could respect him for. I was wrong.

But, this is a mostly democratic town, and he is their Savior - I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.

Does Barry really expect that "Together We Thrive" will fly in 2012? In this economy? Sounds like some Czar has taken a page from Stalin's Playbook. After the Russian Civil War ended in the 20's, Stalin sent students throughout the Soviet Union to spread the message of Collectivism and to spy on those Evil Peasants and Kulaks (the RICH peasant who owned 2 cows) and had the Secret Police arrest those who they reported on.

To this day people are still making money off of t-shirts and other such stuff from 9/11. How is this any different? People died, people are suffering, someone is going to make money off of it.

Oh, come on. This is different and you know it. This "event" wasn't about the victims, it wasn't about a memorial, it wasn't even about making money off of souvenirs (which were distributed to all who attended, by the way) - this was a pep rally for Obama. The cheering proved that even more than the slogans or free tshirts.

And, sure, Obama gave an appropriate speech for the circumstances but if he was a true leader he would have put a stop to the circus. Instead, he lapped up the adulation like the narcissist he is. He can't help himself.

That said, I think 9/11 gear is tacky beyond belief, but I can understand it. Capitalism isn't always pretty, but it works.

Also, trying to defend something crappy by saying it's just as bad as something else makes for a pretty unconvincing argument.

Eric and Bob G put it perfectly... Otherwise, I'd have to resort to four letter words to express my sentiments...

Seen elsewhere: "Gabby Giffords got shot, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt."

T shirts? Frelling t-shirts?

Unconscionable.

I understand that the victims' relatives got special ones that said: "My family member got murdered by a nutcase and all I got was this lousy T-shirt."

Obama has no class and no shame.

it was an utterly asinine event, only missing Jerry Springer for a TV host.
