sacrifice

Seems we're all giving up a piece of our pie (remember this quote?) so that Michelle Obama can say, "Let them eat cake" while she and her husband dine on, well...things like this while on vacation in Hawaii:

* A trio of appetizers: Wong's seafood cake, a tomato with li hing mui dressing and Wong's famous "soup and sandwich," a two-color Big Island tomato soup and foie gras grilled cheese sandwich.
* Lobster lasagna
* Ginger-crusted onaga
* The President's favorite entree, soy-braised shortribs.
* And his favorite dessert, "The Coconut," coconut ice cream covered with dark chocolate, in a shape that looks exactly like half a coconut, served with a colorful array of tropical fruits.

This one doesn't bother me. When I hear about what the President eats, I think that at least the lavish meals are paid for out of the President's own pocket. To complain about what he eats makes his critics appear petty.

To me, the issue isn't so much what the Øbamas are eating (although it is interesting to see that they eat a heck of a lot better than my family does), but that they're taking more vacation time than George Bush ever took, yet he was pilloried in the press for being out of touch and on vacation again...

The Øbamas? Not so much...

I brought up the Hawaii menu because of the pie and cake references. Sheesh.

Monday much?

It's a double edged sword. We pay for all of these lavish vacations. OTOH if he's off on vacation he's not here doing his darndest to ruin my country.

I'm not the least bit surprised the political elites aren't cutting back, even while they expect all of us to do so.

To say I have no respect for The One or Michelle would be an understatement. They've brought a level of classlessness and arrogance to the White House that I didn't think was possible.

We can make a commitment to promote vegetables and fruits and whole grains on every part of every menu.

Heh.

I agree with Mike W.

The money is well spent if it keeps him from doing what he thinks is his job.

I have to third Alan's comment. He hit the nail on the head.

You can't buy class. Not with money, not even with votes.

It's almost as though the first family is jockeying for their own "National Lampoons" spin-off.
