best gun for a woman, better than a pointy stick.

So, everyone's been emailing me links to the story about the beauty queen who shot and killed a violent intruder with her pink .38 snubby. Bravo!

But there was a small detail I noticed in almost all of the articles I read...

Meghan Brown had fired her pink .38-caliber handgun only inside a shooting range. Even there, she said, she wasn't very good.

The 2009 Miss Tierra Verde, 25 and a slender brunet, had trouble pulling back the trigger. When she did manage, she said she almost never hit the target.

...and...

He said he purchased the pink handgun for Brown last Christmas and that the two had gone to target practice together.

"She was not a good shot at the range,” he quipped.

Thank goodness for adrenaline, but I still wouldn't want to bet my life on it.

I glad they lived through the ordeal. Hopefully they've both learned not to answer the door at 3AM.

Bad gun for a woman or not, it got the job done. She and her boyfriend are alive today because she was armed. The Brady's would prefer they both be dead at the hands of an unarmed 250 lb. crazy man.

Well, maybe someone down in her neck of the woods will take her and her boyfriend aside and teach her how to do it properly the next time. Doesn't Caleb live down in Florida?

The perp wasn't crazy. He made a plan, gathered information, decided on a time to put the plan into action, and attacked two people, switching his attention from one to the other based on evidence of which seemed to be the greater threat.

That isn't crazy. That is what professional thugs do. Fortunately, he was experienced enough to decide to do the job himself, rather than have another along who could testify against him. The good couple were in a kill or be killed situation. Technical means enabled her courage to have sufficient effect.

I am encouraging two of my lady friends to learn to shoot and take the CCW training. The first thing I told them both is to shoot as many different guns as possible before making a purchase. And, by all means do not let hubby, boyfriend or anyone else make the decision.

Although Fox reports it straight, the local news article is filled with sly journalist winks and nudges. While this case is an example of a .38 snubbie doing the job, it may be a better example of, "Don't deal illicit substances or associate with people who do." Lifestyle choices make a much bigger difference than gun choices.

I sometimes think about a possible self-defense firearm for my wife and teaching her to shoot. Then, I stop.

1. Due to astigmatisms in both eyes and a determination NOT to do anything I tell her at the range, she couldn't hit water if she fell out of a boat, and, more importantly;

2. Her idea of reacting in a crisis situation (such as our dogs fighting) is to scream, wave her hands, stamp her feet, and start crying.

Perhaps a baseball bat might be better. Or put a really solid frame, door, and lock on the bathroom and tell her to hide in there and hope the police come or the bad guy(s) decide that it isn't worth the effort...

Little mention as well of Mr. Macho who sends his squeeze to the door to answer the 3:00 AM knock. Unless you are expecting someone at 3 AM, the person answering the door should be armed. If you are expecting, then don't go to bed beforehand.

Most people who have responded elsewhere don't think very highly of the boyfriend. Plus he talks too much. What he's quoted as saying just made them target numero uno.

Good point, and I hope she goes back to the range for some more training/practice. BUT, it does point out the fact that women are inherently better shots (when untrained) than men... They just point and shoot...

Getting lucky is better than dying, but not much to rely on.

good thing the bad man was bigger than the target...

She kinda lost my props when she posed for a picture with her pistola and then complained that she should be paid for the use of the photo. She sounds like a cold one.

Still "Wrong gun" is better than "No gun". Now that they know the need for a gun all too well, they might try for one that she could shoot well and the training to go with it.

Rule #1 of a gunfight, right?

The .38 snub did the job....but I hope her next purchase will be some good training...and maybe an XDsc... ;)

Nope, you're so right. We should all start sending her links to The Cornered Cat.

Still better than the Illinois State Police and their "don't fight back, but if you do, use keys, a comb, or a nail file. Better to pretend you have a venereal disease or are pregnant, though, to prevent sexual assault. Oh, and it's also a good idea to make yourself throw up, preferably all over yourself" school of female self-defense.

After reading numerous posts about this shooting, I can't help wondering if the wrong person answered the door. I'm over 40, and know from personal experience that the alarm (clock, cell phone, door bell, etc.) does not always wake me up. So... The perp sees an unexpected 20-something opening the door, and goes into WTF mode. The 40-something "fiance" wakes up, and does the same. Adrenaline takes over, blah, blah, whatever, and a 20-something ex-beauty queen is everyone's heroine, and her 40-something, somewhat naive fiance is a very concerned partner by purchasing her a snubbie she has very limited skill with.

You know, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Well now, consider the older lady who grabbed her revolver and took out the threat a year or so ago down on the North End of Columbus.

They were in town to attend a horse event at the fairgrounds, and were staying at a motel up near the Bud brewery, I can never think of the name of the shopping area that is beside the freeway. The son had left the room and the robber grabbed him and had him under control when they entered the room. Mom grabbed her gun and put the bad guy down with 2 shots.

The son was quoted as saying he was scared to death, first by the bad guy, then more seeing his mom with her gun, because in his words, she couldn't shoot worth squat.

I'd say mom did a helluva job, took the threat out and made this world a better place for all of us. Go Mom!
