Eric Heyl is a sexist jerk.

Given the disdainful misogyny presented in this article, one would have to assume that Mr. Heyl is a pathetic, insecure little excuse of a man with a serious case of mommy issues. He probably doesn't get out much, is still secretly bitter that the head cheerleader wouldn't date him in high school, and eats lonely microwaved meals while standing over the kitchen sink in his bachelor pad.

See? I can make generalizations too! (although mine are far more likely to be true.)

The Charlotte Observer pulled that crap for last year's NRA convention, too. I well remember one of their editorial headlines back then: "Welcome, NRA - - And Please Don't Shoot!"

T said...

Are you sure that wasn't satire? Because surely his little list at the end was supposed to be absurd, right?

And just because women don't go to the conventions doesn't mean they aren't enthusiasts. Whatevs. Gotta go NOT get that facial now.

DixieLaurel said...

Well Breda we all know that women are silly vapid creatures that are only concerned with how they look and smell. No true woman would be concerned with her personal safety or the safety of her family if she can't look HAWT, right?

Commie AgitProp, Breda, just Commie AgitProp. No Proper Female Comrade would EVER Support the RKBA, therefore any woman who does must be a Sarah Palin Wannabe, and we KNOW what would happen if more women acted like she does.

Blogger ate my last comment.

Let's just say I'm half surprised he didn't say that the reason there aren't women at the NRA con is because they're supposed to keep their dainty, unthinking asses in the kitchen to cook & clean.

I mean we all know women have no need to be interested in being able to protect themselves or their families. That's what big, strong men are for, right?

Wow. Usually I have to be reading a liberal blog to find that much concentrated stupid in a single place. My personal favorite (reason women won't carry):

-- The baggy clothing required to successfully conceal most holsters would make them appear frumpy.

Yup. Women cannot conceal firearms and still be hawt. Okay, Tam is a bad example. Okay, Breda is a bad example, too. Okay, don't even go near Oleg Volk's blog.

I wonder if that guy's ever met a woman before.

I attended the convention in Charlotte last year. If I remember correctly, I saw quite a few other females at the convention. Of course, the fumes from all of the Chanel perfume I wear may have fogged my memory by now.

Ed Rasimus said...

I'd like to have had sweet Eric at the CHL class I attended last year here in Texas. The well turned out and well armed women outnumbered the fat old men (clinging to their blah, blah, blah). Of course I don't suspect Eric would do Texas very well under any circumstances.

I only have one question for this...individual.

Project much?

And that's a RHETORICAL question, because I really do not want to know the answer...

Weer'd Beard said...

So by his own standards, as a man he's being stupid for not liking guns as so many men like guns. It works both ways.

What an asshole, Also isn't it nice to be all bigoted and misogynistic when its THOSE women.

Ah if a standard is good, a DOUBLE standard is TWICE as good!

Keads said...

Umm wow. I agree with Bob, The Charlotte Observer did a smear job on the convention as he noted.

If what he says is true, why are my concealed carry classes running about 50-50 male to female ratio?

Dannytheman said...

He's an asshat! Even if it is 80-20, that would be up from 90-10 only 5 years ago. A huge increase in a huge pot pf people.

Brian K Miller said...

You're right. He is a complete asshole and a poor excuse for a human being. Sadly, he strikes me as a typical "open-minded" liberal man.

Jason said...

I don't get that this is particularly anti-gun. He actually raises a good point: it is 80-20, and since there are reasons for everything, shouldn't we be curious as to what those are? Sure, the reasons he offers are facetious, but I suspect that's just a form of gentle prodding. It's not his job to find the real reasons for the disparity. It's ours. That job's not getting done, and he's mocking (justifiably, and rather mildly) that laziness.

Rather than lashing out at the bearer of bad news, how about we just do the job?

Owen said...

While all you ladies are there in Pittsburg, maybe you should pay hima visit together. I'm sure the 15,000 NRA ladies will fit in his front yard quite handily.

Or maybe not...

I was just thinking about this article, and I think you've got this guy all wrong. I want you all to consider what you would suffer if you were to tell Breda that she shouldn't worry her little head about guns and self defense because it'd force her to dress frumpy and the smell of gunpowder would overwhelm her Chanel #5.

Right, you'd get your ass kicked, and the next thing you knew you'd be dressed in a frilly apron and making her some breakfast, bitch!

I think that's his angle. Someone should point out that there are clubs that cater to that sort of thing, and while there is likely to be some crossover, the NRA isn't that club.

He just wants to be covered in oil and whipped.

Glenn B said...

I thought that article was outright hilarity, the wit was pretty dry but seemingly full of humor.

For these people, as long as their stuff is getting read, they'll get their paycheck. It doesn't matter if their readers love them or hate them. Now, he's had a Breda launch. Awesome. :(

A columnist's job is to provoke thought and response. My sincere thanks to Breda and her brethren for helping make this one an unqualified success.

Mike said...

Goes to show you, I thought a columnist’s job was to present an argument. You know, at least one true premise supporting one and only one true conclusion, and to do it in a manner both readable and showing good faith.

Guess that was from back in the days when newspapers mattered.

Unknown said...

Remember: when they do it, it's disgusting racism/sexism/intolerance, and proof of how retrograde those redneck gun toters really are.

When we do it, it's satire that's too sophisticated and high-minded for those redneck gun-toting yahoos to understand.

Lissa said...

He forgot the number one concern that the women in his life would have about packing pistols:

- If they did, they would have to deal with the mess as men like Eric Heyl collectively and repeatedly sh*t their pants.

Breda, I am sure this writer is on your list of "must find and introduce self to" or his FEMALE EDITOR, name unknown but you could look it up. Do! Do! Do!

I was happy not knowing this writer, I never read that paper when in that town - so that kind of makes it a wash... thanks for going.

I was going to say something but you admonish us to be polite.

So, yeah, never mind.

The Captain said...

The sexist remarks at the end of this piece are actually amusing.

‎1) Lessee, spa day vs. new gun. Me: new gun.
2) They now have purses specifically meant for CCH holders. Lipgloss and gun in one bag - yeah!
3) One woman's frumpy look is another woman's "HAWT."
4) Clothes can be washed. Soap is your friend. And as long as a Karen Scott blouse keeps the cartridges from going down my shirt and giving me burns, more power to 'em.
5) Not true. Guess this guy's never seen the hot pink guns before. I'm waiting for a 9mm with red grips.
6) Going deaf @the range is even less sexy than not wanting to wear earplugs. 'Sides, I've got a sweet headset that takes care of that problem.

This dude needs a trip to the range for shooting lessons - from a female instructor, no less.

Eric and I are now pen pals thanks to you Breda :D

I don't think he liked it when I wrote back to him with this:

"I was considering becoming a columnist and writing ignorant, misogynistic pieces about topics that I had no knowledge at all but since you have that market covered I decided to be an animator instead. At least with my field we admit that what we create is a fantasy from our minds."

Yes, I blogged it

Glenfilthie said...

Oh jeez, that was funny. I'm sorry Breda but that WAS funny. It's not often you can laugh with and at a journalist at the same time.

Your rebuttal was pretty good too!

Now if you'll excuse me, the cat and I have some mystery meat in the microwave to attend to...

An Ordinary American said...

I agree with my fellow Texan, Ed, when he says that this metro-sexual writer up in Pittsburgh wouldn't get along very well, or last very long in Texas.

And Eric? When you say your job is to "provoke thought and response," have you ever considered the fact that your job might end up as "I THINK I'm going to RESPOND to his column by whipping that Yankee's ass if I ever see him?"

I, for one, am sick and tired of sissy boys (and girls) figuring that the First Amendment protects them from an ass-kicking.

It doesn't. It merely protects you from the government persecuting or prosecuting you.

You see, Eric, I'm one of these neanderthal types you despise so much: Combat veteran, former law enforcement, successful and financially comfortable middle-age educated white heterosexual male, semi-retired. . . who is CONSERVATIVE TO THE HILT.

I'm also fed up with loud-mouth liberals honking that hole under their nose all the time and never being called out for it.

So I've started openly and vocally challenging you libs wherever and whenever I hear you spewing your bullshit.

Fastest way there is to shut up a liberal is to face off with them with no police to protect them.

Gets might quiet.

Kinda tells you about the strength of their "convictions," doesn't it?

Hunh.

So another member of The Smart and Caring set opens his mouth to show just exactly what trogloydic thoughts he's projecting onto his image of other Americans.

:| <---- totally shocked. srsly.

This guy is simply a crappy reporter. I will assume he is not stupid so he has to be lazy and/or bias to the extreme.

If his boss finds this out I can see him easily being fired for total lack of fact checking and blatant bigotry.
Wow. Time for apologies and crow eating at this point.

1. "Women" can't afford a spa and a gun, but they can Chanel? Has he priced it lately?

2. Why in some of his columns is the stain agent gunpowder residue and sometimes grass and dirt, and the stain worry item sometimes shoes and sometimes a blouse?

Poor Eric. Beaten in an ass kicking contest by a one-legged librarian.

Hey Eric, the only reason I would travel the distance from where I live to Pittsburgh to attend the NRA Convention would be to meet women!

Fuel prices being what they are; you know...

Ed Foster said...

"A pathetic, insecure little excuse of a man". Sounds like somebody's been watching a rerun of "Far And Away", with the chicken plucking episode and Nichole Kidman.

Friend Eric should come to Connecticut, where a majority of pistol permits go to women. I've been running transition classes to get the pistol ladies familiar with High Power Rifle shooting.

Most of them do very well, because, unlike many of their boyfriends, they usually listen to the instructor.
