@ the movies

I very rarely go to the theater anymore - mostly because I'm cheap and try to avoid having to deal with the public if I'm not getting paid for it. I also know that if I just have a little patience, I can get whatever I want from Netflix and view it from the comfort of my sofa while drinking booze. This beats sitting in an uncomfortable chair in the dark, surrounded by a bunch of strangers (& without a decent adult beverage!) - hands down, every time. Besides...having to turn around and deathstare the one jerk who insists on narrating the entire film for his friend who keeps crinkling his candy wrappers completely ruins my social entertainment experience.*

Once in a while, though, there comes a movie that requires a big screen viewing. I think Sucker Punch is going to be one of these, at least for me. Mostly because of this:

I don't really know what the movie is about and I don't even care. Chicks with guns and steampunk airships and a pink bunny face giant robot of death? I'll be at the matinée.

Giant robots, biplanes, airships, B-25s, chicks with guns...

No plot needed.

Plus dragons, and Scott Glenn.

Alan is right... who needs a plot?

OMG, dragons!? That makes it even better! Woot!

Movies like this are so badass they don't need a plot!

They have flasks for bringing whiskey into movie theater's y'know?

Went to the biggee Cinerama theater to see Star Wars, with my then lady. She had a purse (duffel bag) that needed it's own Zip Code. Fresh, buttered popcorn and BEER! Just had to wait for the loud parts to 'pop-the-top'!

Saw it yesterday, know the audience is from nineteen year old males to twenty-five, send copies to Afghanistan (they shouldn't have to buy bootleg). Will own it one day, and I really don't believe that women should be in combat, but then this isn't reality is it? And the movie is deeper than all the busting bullets. Actually I was impressed with trigger control on the automatics.

I haven't seen it, but I thought I should give you fair warning: Every review I've read for this movie said that it sucked big hot balls. This goes double for the reviewers who saw it because they figured it couldn't not be awesome. Not trying to be a party pooper; just didn't want you to go in without at least a head's up.

You should have a t-shirt made:

I'm a Librarian and I will not hesitate to SHUSH you.

Joanna,

But... but... look at that picture! How can it suck? Seriously, how?

Josh Kruschke said...

It was visually stunning, but I wasn't happy with the acting. Also, it was full of clichés and standard trick ending. Maybe I just had built up to high an expectation.

My 2 cents,
Josh

Tam,

What Joshkie said. The consensus seems to be failure to execute, follow through or do anything new with the cool visuals. Apparently it's the movie equivalent of watching a muscle car carefully driving the speed limit on residential streets.

So how many of you agree with me that this is about a girl with multiple personalities?

All the other girls are alternate personalities in Sweet Pea's mind.

Who cares how "good" it is?

It could just be a slideshow of pictures like that and I could sit there for 90 happy minutes.

You might consider Battle: Los Angeles. Saw it today on the recommendation of ASM826 and it was cool. Alien invasion with aliens that can be brought down with enough 5.56 NATO. Sorta like people. Aliens with enough tech to get here, but nothing particularly magic-y like the "green shields" in ID.

No pink bunny face robots, or steampunk, but plenty of other stuff.

Joanna,

See that picture in the movie poster? I'd pay five bucks to see that projected on a big screen for an hour or two. I'd throw in another two bucks if it moved.

I mean, giant robot armor with bunny faces, zeppelins, and triplanes? I am SO there.

I don't agree with the negative reviews. I saw and heard some before I went and saw it, and from the trailer I expected 'turn off brain, watch pretty explosions.'

I got that, in spades. I don't think I'd pay extra to see in IMAX, but I'll probably buy the blu-ray.

Explosions, cute chicks, stripper outfits, explosions, guns, planes, explosions, steam-powered clockwork zombie nazis, explosions, giant death robots, dragons, and some explosions. Stir in just enough plot to make it hold together. Pepper with Scott Glen delivering sage wisdom such as "Don't ever write a check with your mouth you can't cash with your ass."

Enjoy :)

There is also this:

Graybeard -

I'm not sure which movie I was more disappointed in Battle for Los Angeles or Sucker Punch. In Battle for Los Angeles I wanted Lee Ermey to show up and kick that one guys ass for embarrassing the Core with this whining about his brother and "are we expendable to sarge?"

Sigh....

Tam-

Sucker Punch is a very, very pretty movie. I would in joyed the movie just as well with the sound off.

That does look cool. I might attend if they have it in iMax, otherwise my smaller screen, but closer and surround sound is still better.

iMax is a different experience entirely.

As for the booze, I have smuggled flasks and beercans and such into movie theaters. Nice but alcohol consumption makes pee, and you can't pause the big screen.

My expectations were low for Suckerpunch.

I was pleasantly surprised.

I really enjoyed it. More plot than I expected.

Good Guns!

ravenshrike said...

Sucker Punch is best described as a 30 minute drama/horror film interspersed with 80 minutes of drool-worthy fantasy sequences. The reviewers just don't like it because it doesn't keep to either the drama/horror vein or the fantasy sequence vein.

Old NFO said...

Plot? Who cares :-) Guns, girls and mechanical mayhem... What else does one need!

Marty said...

Well? What did you think?

Unknown said...

Take what Ravenshrike said and reverse it.It is about 30 min of drool worthy fantasy and action with about 80 min of some of the most confusing and boring plot ever written.

Kevin said...

It was worth the $7 matinee price. The fantasy combat sequences were OUTSTANDING.

The rest of the story was meh.
