Traveling Summer Adventures

Every summer, libraries join together in promoting themed reading programs to keep up circulation during those months when patrons think "beach!" instead of "book." Librarians and patrons get a chance to partake in fun activities and reading contests that they might not have time to enjoy during the busy school year.

This year, libraries are doing an "Around the World"-type theme and are encouraging older readers to watch foreign films, pick up a book about far-off lands, learn a new language, and the like. Kids attend special weekly programs where they "travel" to different countries by visiting the children's department, which has been magically transformed into an "airport."

Fun for the whole family!

The 'security station' won't be complete until you add Oleg's TSA poster.

Oh look, they even have a pretend PervOscan set up. How cute.

Interesting that the symbol for an airport is a TSA check point instead of maybe, I don't know, An Airplane!

Gonna let the Perv Hobos put on some purple gloves?

When I was but a wee sprite, in the summer between first and second grade, (about 1961)I read a bunch of books to earn my official credentials as a certified "bookworm". I was awarded the certificate in front of my second grade class when school started up in the fall. The last book in the worms tail was "Ping" the little Chinese duck that stayed out all night on the river. My mom thought the book would be too hard for me. I showed her.

I was excited when I went to grab a book today, my library was packed with patrons. It was actually kind of loud in there...and NO ONE was "shushing" them!!!

*sigh* Kids these days probably play TSA screener instead of doctor, don't they?

MonteG; I gave up on the future when I saw the little girl things running around wearing *Pornstar*.

As Marko said Prostitot!

And yes! the little darlings were playing *Pornstar*.

TSA Screeners may be a vile thing, but they have good company!

Good idea, but a TSA booth??? I guess reality IS a good idea, teach em young, right?

Great way to scare kids away from the library and books forever.

Well, I was thinking it, but Weer'd did it much better than I could have. I'm trying to decide if I should laugh or puke. Maybe both...

I see cardboard.
I see brown wrapping paper.

I'm thinking Sharpie. :)

"Arbeit Macht frei" would strike too many as way overboard - but I'm thinking "Necessity is the creed.." would be just the perfect thing for a five year old to read, and associate with that box ever ever after.

Maybe inside so it sticks around longer, but if it kept reappearing on the face until it went away, that would rock.

Small things. :)

On a positive note, the lady who owns the restaurant at Fort Erie, Ontario saw me reading while I was eating there, and struck up a conversation about reading. We are now building a free library for truck drivers who stop in at her restaurant, bringing books we've read in and adding to the bookshelf. If a driver has the desire to grab up a book, they're free to take it with them.

I've got hundreds of paperbacks I've read while waiting for loading the truck, unloading the truck, or simply waiting for my dispatcher to do his job. The owner up there has hundreds of books she and her son are finished with, and she's adding them as well.

Baby steps towards literacy, but no effort succeeds until you take that initial step. It can't hurt.
