instagram1

Since not all of my readers are friends with me on Facebook and even less follow me on the iPhone app* (& because no one has come out with a compatible Blogger sidebar widget yet) I figured I'd share my Instagram photos on my blog.

A preying praying mantis, found in an alleyway in downtown Willoughby. Such an aggressive predator, it would wave its arms menacingly at me when I got too close, ready to fight. I'd never seen one in real life before so I had to risk it. And I've got to say that it's a little unnerving when an insect is large enough that you can make eye contact with it.

* also Mike, Mr. Anti-Social Media, has asked me to post them for exactly the same reasons

Mantids are cool.
Did you know that they will not eat a bug that is not moving? They do no see it as prey.

Word verification: gagrat
Sounds like someone gave tofu to a rodent.

The only insect, AFAIK, that can move its head.

I don't do Facebook, and don't use a phone for anything but talking to people.

Weirdest mantis encounter I ever had was at my current job (hotel). I happened to check the closed-circuit camera one night and noticed that the life ring was floating in the pool. I went out there and discovered a large mantis perched on the ring. I suppose he could have flown off, but for some reason he didn't. I drew the ring gently out of the pool, then took it to a nearby shrub. The mantis looked at me as if to say "Thank you!" and climbed off the ring, onto the shrub.

Haha, I had a pet praying mantis about 10 years back. Little guy was completely docile, I would let him walk on my hands. But getting food for the critter was a challenge.

The first time you're up close and one of them takes flight can be a little....unnerving.

Our dog found one on the step a couple weeks back. Only the second one I've ever seen, so we took it in and let the kids watch it and learn about them for a day before we let it go.
