+1 to that Marko! That's my favorite too. I'm betting everything was done the night before.
Oh my God...I never went to Science Fair and now I feel I really missed-out. But wait, I have been to DesignCon, so it's close?
The Fat Man is an Estes Rocket Kit. I never had one prefering The Far Side three-stage instead as my work rocket.
There was a Cam-Roc as well.
I don't know about sending a Fat Man to Mars but I did lose a lot of upper stages off the Far Side. They had to go somewhere.

I could add a comment about the young lady and her "Who's your daddy" entry. But I'd probably get banned.
It strikes me some of those kids have senses of humour way more developed than we give them credit - or they've got parents/teachers with wickedly funny warped minds.

I'm all about "extreme wood."
My daughter won her 4th grade science fair with a perpetual motion machine - well, to be accurate, an investigation and debunking of a purported perpetual motion machine. She found a classic perpetual motion design (moving weights on the rim of a large wheel) and copied it using a bike wheel and simple bolts.
I think the people who enjoyed it the most were the guys we approached in a bike shop with a request for a bent wheel. They asked lots of questions, thought about it, argued whether it would work or not, decided it would look really cool, and donated a slightly bent (but usable for her purposes) racing bike wheel (with excellent bearings) to the project.
Having the machine set up in the science fair, every time somebody gave it a whirl the noise it made was quite wonderful, and attracted more people to try it.
Her next project was an attempt at faster than light travel. She's going places, this girl of mine.
