She loved it. (See the gunchick smile?)
Mom Fallacy and I had a wonderful mother-daughter afternoon at the range. When we arrived after reviewing the 4 Rules in the car on the drive over, we were warmly greeted by the range attendant. "Mom!!" he said when he saw her get out of the car. "What are you going to shoot?"
"I'm not really sure," Mom said, laughing. I had brought a handful of pistols and the Glenfield model 60 rifle, which I handed to her. I figured it was light enough for her to carry...so there she was, my mom, standing on the sidewalk with a rifle in her hand. It was really very cute, but...
"We'd better go in, Mom. We don't want any awkward conversations with the police."
So we went inside, signed the register, put on our eyes and ears and we were ready. The sound of a gunshot made her flinch, a big flinch. Indoor ranges can be very loud. "Get that out of your system now, Ma. Take some deep breaths, you'll be okay."
And she was, of course. By the time I had hung the first target and set out a few pistols on the bench, she was as calm and cool as if she shoots every day.
Mom decided that she liked the Ruger MkII more than the Taurus .22 revolver, which she said felt awkward in her hands. She had a hard time finding a comfortable grip and, from the previous time at the range, I really think she prefers a semi-auto anyway.
I let her try my Bersa Thunder .380 and she said it felt nice in her hands - until she pulled the trigger. She felt that the caliber was a bit much for her, so I guess we'll have to work up to it.

I didn't run the target out very far because I just wanted her to pull the trigger as much as she wanted and have fun...and, boy did she!
My mom is awesome - and I'm so very proud.

That's awesome. I should try to get my mom out to the range (not likely).
Not only is your rifle an assault rifle in Joisey, but it's a machine gun in DC.
Isn't it embarrassing that our national capitol is run by totalitarian morons?
Regardless, glad the day was good and hope you and Mom Fallacy follow up (see now, "Mom Fallacy" suggests that she's actually your mother in law, unless Fallacy is your maiden name, which you keep for professional reasons).
Ma takes a pretty good picture too, Breda!! Glad you both had a good time!!
On the .22...a tube fed semi-auto .22 as an assault rifle?? Sheesh!!
Today I bought myself a Bersa .380 at the gunshow...hope to have a range report later this week...
Awesome Breda! That smile says it all! Has she expressed interest in going shooting with you again?
Steve - I don't think "fallacy" is her last name.
And where is your range that you'd be worried about standing outside with a rifle in hand? Is it in a somewhat urban area?
ROCK ON, MOM!
Yays. Glad y'all had such a grand time. Lovely woman, she.
steve - How I came up with the name of my blog is a very short silly story but "Fallacy" is not my name, my husband's name, or my mother's.
joseph - I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion!
mike w - we were standing on a busy street, cars zooming past. I could imagine someone calling the police as they whizzed by.
phlegmmy - my mom is really terrific, don't you think? =)
Way to go Mom!
Why am I not surprised she's beautiful like you are.
My Mom taught me to shoot. I was lucky.
Good for you to return that kind of favor.
Excellent! It's a time spent together neither of you will ever forget.
Good..... just plain GOOD.
You just corrupted your mom. awesome!
I'll raise my adult beverage in her honor this evening.
On the gun/busy street thing, you aint lived until TWO friggin cops show up to investigate the cause of the "OMG THERES A GUY WITH A GUN!!" call.
Whyizzit all Irish moms are "Ma"?
Not "mother", or "mom", just "Ma".
Mine was too. She used to keep saying "I'm going to change my name to "Murgatroid"(?) to stop the Ma(s)".
Yours is cool. Keep spendin' time w/her- mine left 3 years ago this week- she never did learn to shoot though.
Attagirls all around...
¡Fantástico! Looks like she had a great time!
It is always better to shoot with people that you like, than to shoot against people that you don't - but that is true about everything: it is better to sing with people that you like than to sing against people that you don't. Thanks for the pictures and adding one more person to the rolls of people that don't believe guns are evil - just some louder and more uncomfortable than others. One person at a time, folks! Knowledge is Power.
I think "Mama Fallacy" has a better ring to it.
That is made of pure Awesome.
I was going to say "I hope you know how lucky you are!", but then I realized that, yeah, you obviously do. :)
Very, very nice, Breda. Ma Fallacy looks like she had a blast (pun intended).
Now that I've got my Remington Nylon 66 back up and running, it's time to drag Mom G. to the range (The 66 was her favorite rifle back in the day - the day, mind you, when one could shoot cans at the sand pit right in town - in MA!)
I couldn't help but notice that your mom is shouldering the rifle right-handed but then is pictured holding the same rifle left-handed.
Is she ambidexterous?
kaveman, I posed her with the rifle so it would still be pointed downrange.
Way to go Mom!
A nice mother and daughter outing. I can see where you get your smile and your dimples.
Way to go, Mom!
That's awesome! Very cool, looks like she had a great time!
Breda,
Ok, the range report on the Bersa .380...
Put 50 rds of CCI cheap ammo through it.
One failure to feed, one failure to go into battery. However, it's new and the ammo was not the best, so I'll reserve judgement on it.
Firing the Bersa actually hurt the web of my hand between the fingers and thumb at times, something I have not experienced before with .22, .38, 9mm or .45. That could have to do with my grip, though. As far as accuracy...kinda depressing. While about 95% of my rounds were on the target area, the rounds on target were all over it!! That was true with the .22 and 9mm I was shooting as well. The 9mm is DAO but the accuracy was similar two the two other pistols. Oh, well, it's an excuse for more range time!! LOL
Blast is a HUGE issue with learning to shoot without flinching. I'm a big fan of double-muffing new shooters with plugs and muffs.
But they need to hear range commands for safety's sake.
No problem. Put electronic muffs on the newbie, turned up full blast, over the ear plugs.
