Saoirse, 2

When anyone asks me about the Irish character, I say look at the trees. Maimed, stark and misshapen, but ferociously tenacious.
-Edna O'Brien
Ireland continues to say " póg mo thóin" to the EU.

"at some stage or another, the Irish had to give their opinion"--N. Sarkozy

Uh, didn't they just do that?

-Jeff, uh yeah they did, but it'll continue to be ignored until it conforms to what the EU wants to hear.

They gotta pick a fight with someone if they aren't gonna fight each other, and this one needs to be fought.

Good Madam Breda:

When I watched Braveheart with my son, I told him "those are our people" and I tell you now Breda, those pugnacious ruffians are our people. I am just as proud of them as I can be. The last repository of testosterone in Europe.

well, y'know, if the Irish really didn't like the EU, they could always secede from it.

oh, wait. the legal procedures for an orderly, peaceful secession from the union would have been introduced in that treaty they just voted down. so just what do the Irish want with the EU?

Mr nony moose,
The Irish pretty much have what they want from the EU. Though they got more than they wanted. What they wanted was reduction of tariffs and whatever they could get to aid their new found prosperity. What they don't want is outside rule. They had that for a few centuries and it did not work out well.
