Hope.

I sat in front of the television last night, hands tightly clasped and heart in my throat. The stakes were high - this speech was so important. "Oh, please. Please let it be great," I whispered.

I wasn't disappointed.

Strong and beautiful, Sarah Palin walked across that big stage alone and, despite knowing that millions of eyes were watching her carry the weight of history and the future of the GOP on her shoulders, she never faltered. And amidst wild applause, she stood before the nation and accepted the party's nomination for Vice President of the United States. She looked sure. She looked ready.

Her speech was, in a word, brilliant. I'll leave the analysis for those who do that sort of thing for a living because all I can honestly do is gush and wax poetic. We all know a woman like Sarah - the unapologetically smart, boldly determined chick who can hang with the guys without ever losing the best qualities of being female. The one who puts on lipgloss to beat you in a debate. The one who has read books you've never even heard of and laughs at jokes that would make your mother blush. The one who works hard and loves fearlessly. The one who can shoot a moose in the morning and cook it for dinner that night. The one who lives her life as she chooses, never asking for approval. The one who lesser women hate and real women want as a best friend. The one who you should never, ever underestimate because she will make it her life's work to prove you wrong.

America has a new hero - and she wears heels.

McCain's got my vote because of her.

I dream one day of a Washington DC whose swamp has been drained and the crocodiles turned into purses...and I think she can do it.

I was thinking about this a bit last night and came to the conclusion that there are two types of feminists out there: skirt-wearing feminists such as Sarah, and pants-suit wearing feminists such as Hillary. (You of course get an exemption, dear Breda).

Sarah definitely kicked butt last night. Prediction: you know what the next MSM meme will be? They'll call her shrill and a bitch, trying to turn off her supporters. Watch and see.

After a lifetime run of voting for the lesser of two evils....someone to vote FOR.

I like Trig, by the way. Normal folks. Just like a lot of us.

People are talking about the first female VP.

They don't realize they just watched the first female POTUS.

Very cool, I am not excited about this election, &

West, By God said...

Lydia, this was not a policy speech, it was an introduction speech. If you were disappointed, it is probably because you were expecting something else.

She'll talk foreign policy when its time for her to do so. Same with ever other issue Democrats are accusing her of having no experience with.

And her baby Trig wasn't in danger. Only over-protective mothers would make that complaint... and their children probably wear bubble wrap when they leave the house.

Yes, she did bash Democrats, but not nearly as harshly as she's been attacked. Frankly I would have liked to see her being a little more mean. Regarding her addressing the baseless attacks against her character... well if she addressed them, she would legitimize them. They will all be sorted out in due time.

Also, she didn't speak for 45 minutes... it was more like 30. 10 if you cut out the raucous applause and ovations.

In other news, sounds like Breda has a crush :)

Lydia, you guys really ought to lay off the "she's not a good mom" attack lines....they're not working & reminding everyone why they hate liberals (not Democrats, different thing).

Well said, Breda!

Breda - you forgot one

she is the kind of woman you hope your daughters grow up to be. . . .

You vote however you please, but, lydia, it's been well known for years that the DNC implements quotas (they call it, cough, 'goals', cough) for the delegates allowed at their conventions.

Tho', your lambasting a speech given by a woman (thought that was considered 'diversity' all these years) is notable in this context....but, looking at the color & makeup of the people attending? My red flag is raising....

Breda;

We all know a woman like that. I do, anyway. (::points finger toward Willoughby::)

And, she's apparently a big fan of library censorship. Woo censorship!

Anonymous -

try doing your homework before leaving comments. "Apparently" is not good enough here, especially when you have a reference librarian to actually search out the facts.

In fact, when I was interviewed for my job at the library, I was asked the exact same question: "Would you be willing to ban books because of content?" It's a TEST.

Here's a post with "other" information about Sarah. You'll have to decide yourself what you think about it...

I think that's a very valid question when hiring a librarian.

I think it makes much less sense to ask of a current librarian by a new mayor.

I think it makes even less sense than that when the librarian is later sent a letter claiming she would be fired because "the new mayor felt Emmons didn't fully support her and had to go." (your source). It continues to make little sense when the question is then asked again in a public City Council meeting.

That sounds like a little more than just a test. Or, at the very least, like some very intensive testing.

I may be naive in believing that a city librarian's job should be fairly apolitical.

Are loyalty tests like this normal for librarians?

The facts of the event are, of course, somewhat muddled, but it doesn't seem to be a 'slam dunk' either way. Hence the appropriateness of 'apparently'.

For those people who are not mothers, do not tell other mothers how to raise their children. It is ridiculous to criticize her because of worries about hearing damage. Being in a convention with cheering does not damage hearing.

Politicians have babies and children of the nominees for decades at conventions. So why is it bad for a woman candidate to have her baby there? Watch your sexist assumptions, many women have sexist assumptions.

I think the Palin we have to watch out for is Piper - she almost stole the show from her mom!

Agreed. Piper is a cute little girl. I loved when she licked her whole hand so she could fix the baby's hair.

After Palin is POTUS.

We need Breda to head her Presidential Library.

Said Breda: We all know a woman like Sarah - the unapologetically smart, boldly determined chick who can hang with the guys without ever losing the best qualities of being female. The one who puts on lipgloss to beat you in a debate. The one who has read books you've never even heard of and...

Well...maybe not know, but I am reading her blog!

At least one of my daughters is showing strong signs of turning out that way. If I do my job, maybe they both will. Having women like Sarah (and Breda of course) willing to serve as high visibility examples will help me immensely.

Makes me think of the old saying about a Real Man: women want to be with him, men want to BE him.

Palin may be the equivalent.

Yep. Dating her in fact, lucky me. :D

Well, except for the cooking part. She could burn water. (And has.) I usually deal with that part.

Lydia:

Inside a Republican National Convention is probably one of the safest places on the planet this side of the White House security cordon or Fork Knox.

Furthermore, I can't think of a single conscionable reason that any self-respecting lover of liberty could tell a mother that she can't bring her infant child with her in a public place. My wife and my 7 year old son both thought it was great that she brought the family up on stage.

Perhaps if you would actually elucidate your reasoning rather than your merely defend your right to your opinion, I'll consider the facts of the matter.

I found this along with the newspaper article you linked to, to be quite disturbing.

I hope that you will make a blog posting on this subject. Perhaps there is something I am missing, but I find the idea of a mayor advocating censorship in the local library to be unethical.

I would like to know about your personal experience with the TEST.

Without even delving into the "he-said/she-said" library story-ette, is everyone here clear on the difference between "Not stocked by the municipal library" and "Banned"?

'Cause I'm gettin' the vibe that not everyone is...

Okay gals, here's your Palin story for the day...

Friend of a friend ran into her just before her gubernatorial inauguration.. seems Mrs. Palin thought having a new set of clothes just *might* be appropriate for being sworn in as the state Governor.

So.. some fancy dancy tailor shop?

nah. Sears.

What was that about walkin' your talk? Give the lady the federal budget, please. I'll take that over $400 haircuts anyday. :)
