don't defuzz

Yesterday, while perusing my new favorite online social networking site Facebook* I came across an advertisement that made me literally stop and say, "Wait, what?!"

And I did a screengrab because, well...I just had to share.

Now, the concept of a man shaving his chest is not foreign to me. I realize that swimmers wanting to be as sleek as seals do this and probably bodybuilders and male underwear models do too. It seems to be job-related, so hey, cool. I even believe that a person should be able to do whatever they like cosmetically to their own bodies. I mean, I have tattoos and a piercing, so I'm really not in a position to be judgmental.

So let's call it a personal preference - I like men and most of the time, men have chest hair. It's a simple concept, really - chest hair is touchable and utterly masculine. It reminds us that this is a man, not a mere smooth-chested boy. Add in that little wisp at the open collar of a man's shirt and yowza. Tantalizing.

A full chest of hair is something that tends to come with a bit of maturity (something that many women would be wise to consider a feature, not a bug, in their choice of mates) but youth has long been the standard for beauty. Media encourages this idea so some modern men think it necessary to shave their chests. It could also be that a shaved, waxed, plucked, manicured, metrosexualized man is easier to accept somehow, less threatening to the myth of grrlpower**.

So lately we women only have pubescent looking male stars to ogle in the theater and in magazines, we've been left dissatisfied and wanting - but it's a trend that I am happy to report is changing. I am celebrating the return of masculine beauty and I am not alone!

Also, I find it funny how social I am online considering I'm quite the opposite in real life. I rarely answer my phone when it rings, but contact me me on Facebook? Chatterbox.
**in my opinion, being a strong woman is not about emasculating men.

Count me in- while I'm not a fan of the all-over Sasquatch look, I do prefer men to have male secondary sex characteristics.

And, fortunately, mine does.

Love your Blog got turned on to it by Bad Idea Guy at targetrichenvironment.net. I think your blogs are great, Funny, and insightful. I Consider myself a man and not a metrosexual. Thanks for saying what needed to be said. There is room in this world for powerful women and real men. Keep up the good work.

Well, does this mean the shaven body and the day three bearded stubble are gone from my list of why I am not in snyc with modern man? Although I am really sure I don't have any intentions of kissing any male stars of Mad Men and I think 'real' men don't have such impulses... but then what do I know about real men? I am so out of it.

To quote the great Mike Meyers as Austin Powers:

"Yeah Baby!"

Srsly, tho, I know a lot of men that have gotten shit from their women when they started to grow their facial hair out... A lot of them folded and cut it all off...

I dunno what is worse: the women not liking it or the guy yielding and cutting it off.

Well said Breda!

The same goes for men who shave their legs for non-occupational reasons.

Stop by my employer's slightly creepy/slightly funny website for more:

Wait - men shave their legs too??? Ack.

Anonymous said...

They sure do! Shave or wax, don't ask me but they do one or the other.

Cyclist and swimmers shave their legs to reduce wind resistance ... or so they say.

and sci-fi? Optical inch? Is that like an optical illusion?

It learns a better use of the "search" function, or it gets the hose....

I swear, it has been one of those weeks.

Thanks miss!

Once upon a time the teen daughter of a friend was going all weak in the knees over Orlando Bloom is his fey Legolas days.

Other grown-up gal and I looked at each other and grinned. Time would tell.

A couple years later, same kid was saying "you know.... Aragorn is kinda hot after all..."

"awwww... our baby is growing up."

Um, there's a lot I could say here, but, well, I'll just hold my pretty horses and say I agree with you in a big way.

too right .. i like men who have, as labrat put it, "male secondary sex characteristics".

I've got absolutely no interested in the "shaved, waxed, plucked, manicured, metrosexualized" gender :)

I had hairy this and hairy that, and a thick beard to boot since I was in my teens, but I'll be darned if I could grow chest hair until I was around 35 or 40. No way I am shaving it off, or blasting it off with a laser. As James bond once said to some Japanese guy who told him the Geishas were laughing because he had a hairy chest:

Sexual Dimorphism FTW! It goes both ways too! Women need CURVES too! None of these underfed twig-women I see pictures of.

Men should look like men, and woman women. Why our society decided it would be cool to homogenize the sexes is beyond me, but I won't be a party to it!

Legions of hairy-arsed scots salute you for your sensual sensibility.

agreed completely.

i dated a guy once...a long time ago...and he had this thing for shaving his chest. i'll admit, he was young and that might have played into it (he was just 19 at the time), but i can't tell you just how annoying it is to encounter chest stubble.

I can't for the life of me understand why any man would WANT to shave their chest?

I mean, have these guys not seen Seinfeld?

Click the little thumbs-down button under the advertisement to make it go away.

Yes, the physique set does shave their body. And that should be a waste of effort.

Because, as the Gypsy lady said, you can always tell a real he-man because their chest is bare. Their women folk keep the hair worn off.

Even if I wanted to shave my chest (which I don't), I'd have to wait for Norelco to come out with the weedwhacker version...

Mine is almost all gray on my chest, so it doesn't show up all that well anyway.

There is no hair on my body south of my larynz. Do you people think that I am NOT a tower of masculinity oozing testosterone from every pore? Pah!

I don't shave it off. Poofters shave. Use a blowtorch. MAPP gas.

just FYI: i'm SICKENED by the plethora of barely pubescent skinny birdchesters doing the thing with these girls/young women with grown-assed bodies - practically twice their size. these boys don't even have a chest big enough for a gal to lay her cheek on!

it seems to have started with Sixteen Candles and hasn't quit yet. "That 70s Show" is also a big offender.

blech!

As a massage therapist, there's nothing worse than encountering stubble. Regardless of whether on a male or female body, it tears up MY skin!
I've massaged men who obviously shave or wax their FOREARMS...wtf's up with that?!

Personally, I prefer a man in his natural state, whether hairy or smooth, it's all good!

I hear you, Breda, on the trend of trying to extend youth almost to a ridiculous degree. To deviate from the subject of body hair, in terms of clothing, this XY prefers someone who dresses elegantly and tastefully, rather than some cute 30-something trying to keep up with the latest high school fashions.

Pertaining to body hair--and I hope this isn't too much information--there was a trend in nudist circles about ten years ago to shave everything off. There were some arguments about whether or not that was influenced too much by the gay crowd, which hold a pretty significant percentage in nudist/naturist circles. Because of this, a good many straights like myself preferred to keep ourselves naturally fuzzy.
