Well, it certainly looks dramatic.

I notice gun related cover art all the time now...

...and I have yet to see one that follows the 4 Rules.

I think that's because if you gave most writers and/or designers an actual gun to hold, they'd shriek, pee their pants and start crying, and not necessarily in that order. You'd have to dive to catch the weapon as it fell from their soft, shaking hands. And then they'd tell you that they didn't believe in violence, right before they went off to write and/or illustrate a brutal rape that "develops the character." (Incidentally, had the character had a gun, it would have turned out quite different. I'd rather read that book.)

Yeah. I don't have much patience with those types.

And people always look at me funny when I yell "finger off the trigger" at the screen.

Well, if it isn't sex that is selling; the potential murder (or Lady McBeth washing her damn spot) does sell. But then if shooting pistols badly were such a kick, it would be illegal in Illinois and Chicago, wouldn't it? Where people shoot pistols and revolvers well and safely it isn't on the radar. Anyone trying to round up the loose firearms in Fargo, ND? Nope, got rivers to tend.

Examples of proper and safe gun handling stick out like a sore thumb nowadays.

I'm impressed they got the cylinder release on the correct side.

Just before he shot himself in the ass...
The artist is usually pretty concerned with getting the details right. The Designer (with a corner office, busy on the phone making expense-account lunch-dates) calls the color palette (red/black), makes demands like the drape of the clothing, and calls-for the finger-on aspect to heighten the dramatic "tension."

Then The Designer goes off to lunch and if their salad nicoise and double-martini makes them a little *flush, after lunch they might just change the artwork entirely - even if you have to get it out by a 5:00PM FedEx deadline and it took three days already...

You have me well trained, I noticed he wasn't following the rules the second I saw the cover. You just might turn me into a gunnie afterall.

Sounds like the voice of experience DirtCrashr. :)

It's weird - I remember an old high school friend who'd finally broken into designing video games. He loved shoot-em up type games - but just about freaked when I tried to put a real live rifle in his hands. Odd.

But I suspect the whole "dramatic tension" thing makes more sense in most instances like this. They want stuff to look cool, not reasonable.

The book after this one is titled, "It Just Went Off".

I was going to say something, but TJP did everything I wanted to, and probably did a better job of it.

Hollywood it the same way. They hate the dirty, nasty guns but they sure aren't afraid to use them as props.

Wow, Anonymous...
At least have the guts to sign your name on something like this. (Though likely this is spam).
I want to know where the raw data comes from; in other words, your proof.
And I don't give a damn about UN "laws". They are not a lawmaking body. Last time I looked, American law was based on the Constitution and Judeo-Christan ethics.

As soon as I read the title I thought "It must be about the police." Then I saw the bad gun handling and was sure it was.

Wait, they're blowing up UN buildings??!!

Is there someplace I can make a conrtibution, you know, so they can buy bigger bombs. Cuz there's a UN building in New York what needs blowing up in the worst (best?) way.

But how do you know the hand on the cover isn't preparing to shoot something right then? Perhaps the rules aren't being violated. (and the shooter is looking through the curtains somwhere off the cover of the book)
