Had a ball in blogorado! (part 1)

Farmgirl offered me a bowl of what appeared to be chicken nuggets.

"Would you like to try a little appetizer we made? We call them scrappy nibbles."

I took one. "Mmmm, deep fried," I thought. I like deep fried. "What''s in them?"

"Meat."

Oh, okay. I like meat. I popped it in my mouth. Hmm. A little chewy, but not bad. I went back to my beer and didn't think any more of it...until I wanted another snack. I went to the table and found that there were a few scrappy nibbles left. Mmm. Deep fried meat. I had been shooting all day, was tired and hungry, and they seemed the perfect thing. I picked one up and turned to go back to my seat. Farmgirl was there, smiling again. I put the crispy nugget in my mouth and began to chew. Farmgirl then says, "Do you know what those are?"

I noticed everyone in the room was staring and grinning at us.

"Uh...meat?" I said, hopefully.

"Yes, it's meat," Farmgirl said, pausing dramatically. I was still chewing but starting to second guess swallowing. "Breda. Those are testicles."

".........." I didn't believe it. To me, a Yankee, eating testicles is mythology. People don't do that.

Everyone was laughing.

"Okay, wait." I still had the thing in my mouth, half chewed. "Seriously, wait. Really?"

"Breda, you already ate one! And liked it!"

And then I remembered where I was...Colorado. Near the Rocky Mountains. Rocky mountain oysters. Oh, dear Lord...

(stay tuned for part 2)

We those here as well, but we don't call them scrappy nibbles.

We call them dingle berries.

I love RMO hot, fresh outta the fryer, that is. Can't stand em cold though.

I thought testicles were Amazons daily breakfast. Are you not patched yet?

Around here rocky mountain oysters means sheep testicles. Those things you ate we just call calf nuts.

You must be nuts! LOL

I swear that it was Farmmom's idea to put them out and not TELL anyone what they were till they'd tried em.

I gotta admit though Breda's expression was pretty priceless.

MMMMmmmmmmmm RMOs are killer! Nnice and crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside!

They're GREAT! Too bad they are so seasonal :(

We call 'em calf fries down here in Texas. I love 'em. But I'll eat just about anything. ;-)

Where I grew up in Illinois, RMO were made from boar (swine) testicles. Just as tasty as chicken gizzards but not quite so tough. I prefer them with a bit of Tabasco sauce and ketchup but tastes vary.

New Jovian, don't forget to turn your head first!

Pig testicles are OK.
Back during my first marriage (day before the Iranian hostage crisis started; that should have told me something), I had bought some to try, but didn't get around to it for awhile, so they sat in our freezer. And Cindy liked to make freezer inventories. And she liked to entertain. So people would come over and see "Jeff's testicles" posted on the fridge, and wonder just what kind of relationship we had.

It also sounds like I did a poor job of reading the title!

I would rather eat a Rocky mountain oyster than eat a regular oyster.
