How long idealism lasts:

 3 whole years. Wow.

(Actually...that sounds about right. I think I lasted about 3 years being the Young Adult librarian. Little ingrates.)

Link over to the whole article, too, and remember that librarians love chocolates and flowers. Just saying.

UPDATE: a patron just brought me coffee. Librarians also like coffee.

How in the hell did you last 3 years before becoming jaded? You have far more patience than I, but then I guess someone's gotta do it, right?

I think the paycheck had something to do with it.

I'm confused. I was under the impression that librarians love ammo and bacon.

I thought all librarians loved whiskey, big butts and cats? I'm with MSJ, what's this "chocolates and flowers" crap? :P

Damnit, now I want some Lindt chocolates!

Flowers and chocolates seem to be a bit more universally liked.

Thanks for the link.

If you ever get tired of the hobos in the snow up there, you can have hobos in the heat down here.

Random thoughts:

• "How did you last three years before becoming jaded?" Ask a cop that sometime. In my case, it only took three days.

• What is up with the nice looking women working as librarians these days?

When I was growing up, a librarian was generally so old and so ugly she could care the stink right out of an outhouse.

I look at librarians like Breda and Katie, and not meaning to sound sexist or piggish, but if I were back in school, I'd be the most literate kid around with librarians such as the above mentioned two who actually take pride in both their looks and their job.

• Literacy is everything to me. We grew up poor. My folks were--and are--good people, but everything our family has, we got it on our own. Lot of sweat, blood, callouses and no shortage of heart attacks along the way.

I salute anyone and everyone who works to further literacy. After all, Life does come with instructions--but you must be able to read them in order to utilize them.

Good job to Breda and Katie. Damn good job.

I'd bring coffee, but I'm afraid it would be cold by the time I got there :-) Hang in there Lady!

I thank my stars every day that I'm in academic libraries. Even the minimal interaction I have with the public via community users drives home that public librarianship is probably not for me...
