man up, lady

"....photos of a very young girl toting a Ruger 10/22 carbine, for example, or the young woman in her wedding gown holding an antique pistol are unsettling."

Seriously?

And you wonder why Texas doesn't have open carry.

Well, I imagine the these Texas oil heiresses and socialites are worried the pistols might clash with their designer outfits.

If it's a $10,000 Shotgun it's ok. That's classy.

It's the "cheap" guns that are scandalous. A $400 Glock would be about as welcome as showing up at the "charity" event in a Ford.

It's just not done, you know.

Not even a Ford GT...??

aww, she's sounds like she's butthurt because the book was a success and will actually sell.

You'll never see a coffee table book of "guns we want to ban" featuring terrified anti's and those evil, scary things with that thing that goes up. No one would write that, and more importantly, no one would buy it.

You'll nnever a coffee table book of "guns we want to ban" - because nobody wants to look at page after page of soiled diapers.

Actually, it's our transplants and non-natives that are more worried about appearances and reputations--them and the nouveau riche.

The native money folks here couldn't care less what anyone else thinks.

H. Ross Perot still drives around north Dallas in his Oldsmobile. I saw him at a Men's Wearhouse a couple of Saturdays ago--he drove up in his minivan (he has it to haul his grandkids around).

The Bass family in Fort Worth show up to all kinds of events in Wranglers, starched shirts and jeans.

Unfortunately, we do have a few blue bloods here but fortunately they are more concerned with staying on the social pages than anywhere else. Rest of the state ignores them. Most of them have never worked and inherited their money from parents/grandparents who worked their asses off.

I guess we need them, otherwise the "social gossip" writers would be out of a job.

How about a six year old holding her first .22 and her first target?

I received an advanced press copy of this book a couple months ago and it's not nearly as offensive as I was expecting it to be. Thoroughly unrelateable, as it's full of Parkers and Foxes and other guns I will never afford in my lifetime, but entertaining nonetheless. Very high-fashion photography, which is mostly above my head.

As a whole, the article seems OK. Quite probably the book as well.

As to this one line, so? I can find pictures of a Washington DC High School Girl's Rifle Team which I am sure would actually shock Mayor Bloomberg, never mind unsettle him.

I just don't understand tucking your trousers into your boots.

Ed Rasimus said...

Why the gratuitous TX slap? The author/photog isn't from TX. The article is the Houston paper (which much of Texas disavows as a poor cousin of Austin-SSR) and only mentions that some of the pix are from TX (a mere handful.) You northerners better be careful up there or we'll stop letting you have our boots and beef, let alone our oil. We like our guns down here. We've got more than half a million folks with CHLs (the TX version of CCW).

And, before I leave Willorith, we don't tuck our pants into our boots (and we seldom call them "trousers" although you could if you wish.)

But as Lyle Lovett said, "That's right, you're not from Texas." Buy your pants just a little longer and wear your hat down low the way I do.

My favorite line in this society-page article:

Dressed for success on this evening was jewelry designer Houstonian Jill Reno, who was excited to be in the store with the book action. "I love this," she said. "I'm licensed to carry a concealed weapon so this is great."

@Ed Rasimus: I think you misunderstand: Most of us just sort of ass-you-me that all Texans are on board woith the idea of an armed populace. Evidence that some Texans don't actually like guns is... unsettling.
Kind of like when I learned that Washington State had shall-issue carry permits decades before Texas had any sort of right-to-carry...

Weak thinkers are -always- "unsettled" when their ruling stereotypes get blown away.

And that's only part of the fun of being on the Reason team.

Someone's having a Hissyover a book of Ladies holding Firearms, yet one can have an "Art" exhibit of a Crucifix in a Jar of Urine, and that's cool?

About the "ONLY" Texans that don't like open carry are the transplants around Austin and Dallas... You get out into the REAL Texas, people don't give a rat's ass...

That book is lovely.

Around these parts, pants in boots means it's a little more difficult for the d***ed ticks and their diseases to crawl into your underwear and create pandemonium.
