At the movies

We're staying in and watching It Happened One Night with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert tonight. I haven't ever seen it, which really surprised Mike because he knows how much I like old movies, especially those from the 1930s. The fashion, the cars, the art deco look to everything...fantastic. And, of course, everything always looks better in black and white.

One of my favorite on screen couples from that era has to be the charming and funny Nick and Nora Charles, from the Thin Man movies...Cheers!

My beloved gave me The Thin Man boxed DVD set. Six movies and a CD with bios of William Powell and Myrna Loy. If they ever perfect a time machine I'm going back and throw myself at Myrna Loy.

In 1975 I met Frank Capra, briefly, but the subject was Lost Horizon.

My favorite Thin Man moment is when a hoodlum gets the drop on Powell and Loy in their own bedroom. Powell socks Loy in the jaw and she drops; the hood is so shocked that he just stares at her unconscious body, and Powell socks him, too and takes away his gun. As Powell helps his wife to her feet, he says, "Darling, I'm so sorry." And she replies, "Aw, I knew you could take him, but I wanted to see you do it!"

I love the Thin Man series!
One of my favorites. Second best way to spend an evening, curled up with someone watching old movies.

Breda, we have so many things in common, book, guns, classic movies...

Once, years ago and before the kids showed up, we did a variation on "dinner and a movie" specifically for "The Thin Man." We laid in plenty of gin, vodka and scotch and tried to keep up with Nick and Nora. Reality shows up fast when you try to do that, btw. We had to stop rather early, for safety's sake, but it was a great deal of fun. And the movies still make sense, perhaps even more sense, after a third martini.

And wow, Myrna Loy FTW.

Those two are so much fun to watch together. Great screen chemistry.

Of all the leading ladies in film, I think I've wanted to be Nora Charles most. She's a dame - and I mean that in the best possible sense.

And welcome, Mr. Sprengel!

I love the Thin Man series, and 30s movies in general. I've never seen It Happened One Night, though - although at some point I'll have to watch it. I'm not a big Colbert fan, although I do love Gable.
