Gun Nuts - A Good Run

Gun Nuts is a very different show now than when I first made my debut on air and, feeling that it has gone (and is going) places that I can no longer follow, I have decided to end my time as weekly co-host. I hope to occasionally guest host but feel the majority of my efforts would be better spent on other projects. I wish Caleb the best of luck with his plans for the show.

I will always be grateful for what Gun Nuts has given me - I've met and talked to some extraordinary people, was part of a growing alternative media focused on fighting for our Second Amendment rights and was blessed with listeners that tuned in every week, joined the chat and called in to share their personal stories. It has been an honor.

Add a little caffeine and this kid would be a perfect mini Caleb - he's even wearing a polo shirt! I think my cohost is going to have some competition in a few years.

My first gun show experience was more than a little overwhelming - I didn't know what to ask or what to look for - so I mostly just walked around smiling and saying "No, thank you," when someone offered me a gun to hold. By the time the next gun show rolled around, I had a little more shooting experience and knew what I liked...and then was promptly told by a seller that a Colt 1911 was much too big for my delicate female hands.

So tonight Caleb and I will be talking about gun shows (otherwise known in the 2A community as FUN shows!) - the tips & tricks, the do's and don'ts, the misconception about the dreaded "gun show loophole", and more*. There are two cowboy action shooters who work at the range where I shoot and they've frequently said that it's a shooting sport where the men talk more about their clothes than the women do.

The costumed shooting sports - cowboy action shooting and zoot shoots - seem like a lot of fun. I mean, come on...where else do you have the opportunity to run a Tommy gun while wearing a flapper dress or shoot a single action revolver in leather chaps?

Gun Nuts, now with 100% more gunnuts

Tonight on Gun Nuts Radio, I'm going to be trying something a little different. Caleb is taking a very well deserved night off, leaving me to host the show...alone. Horrors! The thought of an entire hour of me, talking to myself and begging for callers just about sends me into a panic so I decided to ask a friend for a little help. (Thankfully he said yes!)

JayG of MArooned is going to be my guest co-host for the evening! A frequent caller on our show and contributor to a few Vicious Circle podcasts, Jay was the perfect choice. Not only does he have an awesome radio voice, but he's also a great source of Gun Nuts fodder.

I've wanted to do a "Stupid Gun Laws" show for a while now and Jay, being from Massachusetts, probably has enough experience with that to fill 2 or 3 shows. I've been pretty much the sole caretaker for my mom since she broke her arm on Friday. Last night was the first night I've slept at home since then and Advil and I have finally managed to get the stress headache down to a dull roar. So now that I'm well rested and the holiday weekend is over, we'll be doing the circuit of doctor's offices and x-ray machines, trying to figure out exactly what the emergency room got wrong.

Sadly, this means that I really won't have enough energy or brain capacity left to co-host Gun Nuts Radio so I'm taking the night off.

Luckily for you, one of the most awesome gun chicks ever will be the star of the show this evening, returning Gun Nuts guest Julie Golob! Julie will be discussing her new Women of USPSA project with Caleb.

roundtable round-up

Last night's Gun Nuts Radio was a lot of fun - having other bloggers on the show is always one of my favorite things. It's an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the person behind the posts and to finally put, if not a face, at least a voice to the name.

It was a lively, very friendly discussion since many of us have met in real life. What struck me most was how, despite all of our different writing styles and motivations, we all arrive at the same conclusion - that individual liberty is essential and worth protecting and that guns are not only very frequently the right tool for that job but a heck of a lot of fun to boot.
